About CASCADOSS
Project CASCADOSS is dedicated to research the market of Free and Open Source Software for GIS and Remote Sensing, evaluate FOSS4G solutions for environmental applications and promote their use among various group of users. Most important target groups is public sector - governmental and self-governmental (which is one of the priority target group of the European Comisssion). The very special target group is GMES Program (Global Monitoring for Environmental Security) participants and beneficiaries.
Request from CASCADOSS
The most forthcoming activities are International Symposium and the Workshop. We would like to have OSGeo support and patronage for those two upcoming events as an “umbrella” with permission of use OSGeo label in promo activities, including publication at the official CASCADOSS website. OSGeo could announce CASCADOSS project and the patronage on the website, publish news about the events and include them in the OSGeo calendar.
To sum-up: OSGeo and CASCADOSS team are both aiming to promote FOSS4G solutions and its application in environmental projects/activities.
Letter of Support from OSGeo
The OSGeo Foundation welcomes the initiatives of the CASCADOSS project in helping build solid organisation foundations for the public sector and SMEs for the use of the Free and Open Source GIS and Remote Sensing projects which OSGeo exists to support.
In carrying out analysis of appropriate software for use in GIS and RS projects relating to the Environment and management of Environmental Information, CASCADOSS is offering a invaluable service to both users and developers of FOSS4G projects.
Documentation and evalution of software and standards for specific user communities is not a focus of our software development communities. However, such efforts are necessary to our goal of spreading the use of Open Source software, and the economy and efficiency gains inherent therein, to new and broader constituencies. A third-party effort to offer clarity on licensing and future maintenance options to public sectors and SMEs will serve to provide mutual benefit for everyone in the broader FOSS4G community.
An effort like CASCADOSS serves as valuable bridge-building between the free software development community on the one hand, and a network of specialists and scientists such as those taking part in GMES, on the other.
OSGeo is glad to offer support to the CASCADOSS where it can, including promotion of associated events, and re-dissemination of output reports and other documentation.
The Open Source Geospatial Foundation, or OSGeo, is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to support and promote the collaborative development of open geospatial technologies and data.
