Presentations

  • Carpocalypse Calgary
    • Carpocalypse was part of the GeoWomen of Calgary "Data by Design" 2021 datathon. Our project uses curated and processed Open Calgary data to imagine the city without cars, employing Python-based machine learning and spatial analysis in QGIS. We will present our results and give a live demonstration. We are a team of individuals from diverse technical domains, working remotely in three different cities and had not met each other prior to this event. Check out our project in GitHub:
  • Discussion on Projects generally
  • At least some structure is helpful in drawing people to work on projects
  • We can probably hold at the two current potential projects to avoid spreading too thin
  • We'll want to have a place for project notes to be added by participants
  • With each of the projects, we will have the smaller project seed-team(?) have the requirements conversations with the orgs and use that to sketch the projects for new folks joining
  • Notes from Cultural Centre project discussion
    • Scott will give Yui and Nabila a chance to review the website of the sculpture park ( I want to confirm the org is on board before naming them on here )
      • Scott will then reach out for more direct contact at the org and promote - again, provided the org is onside, the project as an open-to-all
      • Yui and Nabila will take part in whatever follow-on conversations are had with the CCC to ensure they have enough of the details to work from
  • Notes on Conservation Area project
  • Stefan and Subhreet have spoken about the project and are ready to have the opening conversation with the stakeholder org
  • Scott will help orchestrate that call.
  • Scott will create a project area on the WIKI where notes can be added by participants
  • Notes on Mentorship
    • I spoke with Jessie Letizia - MAGNA engineering and Cartography nut - and she would be willing to post an hour of mentorship/month whereby people could reach out to her and schedule her time to ask questions about mapping projects
      • This is considered a good idea. We will keep our eyes out for ways to implement somehting like this.

Some suggestions from the chapter for presentations include:

  • Show us your side hustle
  • Bring us your problems ( stuff you're working on and issues )
  • teach something new ( OS Geo projects or other ).
