The Irish Local Chapter of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) are delighted to announce the hosting of the first official meeting of the OSGeo Local Chapter in Ireland and a special one day Symposium in Limerick,Ireland on Friday, 26th May 2017.
At the time of writing in late March 2017, the event is still in the planning phase but the symposium will include a morning session of Keynote presentations and lightning talks followed, in the afternoon, by a series of hands-on workshops focusing on learning and demonstration of some popular OSGeo software projects.
The event is open to anyone. However it will be particular interest to individuals or groups such as : those with an interest in FOSS4G, users of open source software and FOSS4G, geographers and geoscientists, computer scientists, software developers and programmers, software companies, open data users, researchers, government agencies, SMEs, NGOs etc.
The symposium will provide a relaxed and stimulating environment to learn about OSGeo, meet people with similar interest in OSGeo and FOSSG, and in some cases learn some new skills in the workshops.
The programme is currently under preparation. The morning session will include a Keynote presentation, some lightning talks and an open town-hall style discussion. In the afternoon, after lunch, there will be a selection of hands-on workshops. The current list of tentative topics includes:
- Introduction to OpenLayers/Leaflet JS
- Getting Started with git
- Exploring GeoJSON
- Introduction to GDAL
- Introduction to QGIS
The symposium will be held in the Castletroy Park Hotel, Limerick, Ireland. The Castletroy Park Hotel is located in the midwest of Ireland, in Castletroy, Limerick in the province of Munster. This link provides an OpenStreetMap map of the hotel location.
The hotel is situated just off the M7 Dublin motorway, adjacent to the University of Limerick and just minutes from Limerick's centre of commerce. For symposium delegates who wish to drive to the hotel the M7 provides excellent connectivity with most major cities in Ireland.
To encourage a wide and inclusive participation from anyone interested or involved in OSGeo and FOSS4G we have tried to keep our registration fees as low as possible.
We have a special registration rate for all delegates of €50. This rate includes coffee/tea breaks, lunch and access to the workshop(s) of your choice in the afternoon of the symposium.
