I chose to use four symbols, Auckland's sky tower and a Maori motif represented in boat sails. All with a contour line motif from Rangitoto Island just outside Auckland. For the colors, a mix of blue and green to symbolize the link between mountain and sea, and a hint of red, an important color in Maori culture.

The key element in this proposal is spiral motif drawn as a Koru, a traditional polynesian design inspired by an unfurling fern frond. Spirals are an important symbol to almost all cultures globally - this specific rendering is local to Oceania and is an integral part of Māori art and culture. The intention is to represent FOSS4G as a gathering of global cultures and recognising the common bonds we share as a heterogeneous network. Because this is the first gathering of the global FOSS4G community in Oceania since 2009, other symbolic meanings of the Koru apply - new growth, connection, the circle of life.

Using OpenStreetMap data from Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland as a decorative element brings an open geospatial data component to the design - which is also created entirely using open source tools. Colours/text/fonts are almost infinitely adaptable.

Should this concept succeed, any awards will be donated to the FOSS4G 2025 travel grant programme.
The key element in this design is spiral motif drawn as a Koru, a traditional polynesian design inspired by an unfurling fern frond.

Using OpenStreetMap data from Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland as a decorative element brings an open geospatial data component to the design - which is created entirely using open source tools.

Colours/text/fonts/themes are almost infinitely adaptable. Should this concept succeed, any awards will be donated to the FOSS4G 2025 travel grant programme.

Adamsteer: remove reference to OSGeo president, so we don't need to edit this page each year.

> Hi,
>
> I'd like to start a local chapter in XYZ Region. Please tell me
> what I can do to get started on this.
>

I received a very useful response to a similar question. I created a page with the response at Local Chapters/Tips And Guidance

A common and exciting question! Hope the following steps can answer some of your questions.

0. Review Local Chapter Guidelines to make sure you understand what a Local Chapter does and should look like.

1. Start a wiki page for this local chapter. Register and just create a new page on our wiki and start collecting names of people or organisations who are interested in meeting .. and collect any other general information you'd like to share with people about the chapter.

Link it from the local chapters page:
http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Local_Chapters (note some countries with multiple chapters are grouped under a higher level heading)

2. Join the OSGeo main "Discuss" mailing list and introduce the idea there. Then anyone who is on the list and cares about the XYZ Region will be able to find you. Point them to the wiki page in step #1 above so you can start to feel who is interested.
http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss

3. Once you get a critical mass of people or need a better forum for regional discussion, we should create a mailing list for you. You can submit a ticket/request to the sysadmin committee and request the list. Provide who the main contacts/administrators of the list should be.
http://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo

4. After a few months of growing, you may wish to become formally recognised by OSGeo as an official local chapter. The OSGeo Board will want to see that your group is inclusive of newcomers (and open group), has critical mass to maintain movement and seeks to share common goals with the foundation. When you're ready, email the board mailing list with your request to be acknowledged. The board meets once a month and will discuss it at the next meeting.
http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/board

For more information, questions or corrections feel free to contact:
Charter Member Election
As every year we are electing new Charter Members into the Foundation.

* See the official list of Charter Members.
* The 2022 member nominations list provide the nominations.

Membership process
* To be elected, a charter member need a nomination by a current charter member and at least one other charter member seconding the nomination. Only veto can be raised by sending a private e-mail to the CRO that has to inform the board for an anonymous review. If the veto is accepted by the board, then the CRO shall make it public and the charter member is not elected.

For more details see the Membership Process.

Nominate new Charter Members: 2022-sep-12 to 2022-09-30 (19 days)
* Please confirm with the nominated person first!
* Please email [mailto:cro@osgeo.org cro@osgeo.org] (not to discuss at osgeo.org) with their details, using the #Nomination template below. For the Nomination statement use a paragraph describing why you are recommending this person as a Charter Member. Please include details about the positive attributes of the nominee:
** Members should believe in the general goals of the OSGeo Foundation: to support and promote the use of free and open source geospatial software, education and data in a collaborative manner.
** Previous participation in or support of OSGeo activities.
** Previous contribution to free and open source geospatial software, education or open data.
** The person should be willing to put in time and effort on the OSGeo Foundation, perhaps joining committee(s), or volunteering in some other way that gets the Foundation going.
** Members should be prepared to work constructively and positively towards the goals of the Foundation. Good teamwork skills are an asset.
* The CRO will contact the nominated person and confirm they are willing to participate and compile the 2022 member nominations list.

Adamsteer: Adding how we bridged OSGeo telegram and matrix spaces

Matrix is an alternative method of connecting to OSGeo IRC channels.
# Download a Matrix client application (also available on Android and iOS)
# When launching the program connect to matrix.osgeo.org
# When prompted you can use your OSGeo username/password.

Access to community rooms is mostly public. Many rooms are bridged already to corresponding IRC channels (read section below for how to effectively use that bridge).

Using Matrix as an IRC client
To effectively use Matrix as an IRC client for use with OSGeo channels, you should [register your nickname](https://libera.chat/guides/registration) with Libera chat services.

More info can be found about Matrix and IRC can be found on https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-appservice-irc/wiki/Guide:-How-to-use-Matrix-to-participate-in-IRC-rooms

Additional Addresses
If you already have a Matrix room which is not accessible with an :osgeo.org address, you can make it so by adding other 'Addresses' ('Aliases') of the room. For example, the #OSGeoUK:matrix.org room now also has #uk:osgeo.org and #OSGeoUK:matrix.org as additional addresses. To add aliases to the osgeo.org server, you need to be logged in there ( via your osgeo.org account ). Publishing aliases to the osgeo.org matrix room directory requires to have at least "Moderator" status in the room.

Help
OSGeo currently host a Matrix homeserver.

In case of problem, you may contact User:Strk.

OSGeo Matrix Space
An OSGeo Matrix Space is available to group OSGeo-related rooms.

Bridging OSGeo Matrix rooms with Telegram
The instructions here: https://t2bot.io/telegram/ show how to bridge a Telegram channel with a Matrix room. This allows people using IRC or Matrix clients to join Telegram conversations, and vice-versa. This was tested using the Element matrix client, on the #osgeo:general Matrix room (already bridged to IRC) and the OSGeoorg Telegram group: https://t.me/OSGeoorg

Two sections in particular need review / adding: "About OSGeo", and a quote from OSGeo.

Tom asked the board to consider the message OSGeo wants to give in the MoU press release.

MoU release time - both end of June and at FOSS4G discussed, end of June seems to be the consensus

Comments on the draft press release will be accepted until 3 June, at which point the press release will be returned to OGC for final edits and release.
About me
At work I am a polar researcher based in Tromsø, northern Norway - the latest iteration of a 'mosaic career' spanning research, research support, independent consulting, guiding, fixing bicycles and more! My geospatial training was in surveying and geomatics, applied to the frozen ocean at both ends of our planet using airborne and on-ground measurements. I also have a BSc in psychology and a multidisciplinary bachelor of Antarctic Studies. I've used open geospatial tools across research, business, and just making maps for fun. As part of my open geospatial software life I have worked hard to generate a culture of giving back, for example if we build a business tool based on open software, improvments are shared with the community (rather than branched into 'business specific' tools).

At home I am an adventurer at heart and parent to two boys. In general I would like to spend a lot more time getting lost in the mountains!

My vision
I want to help maintain a community which goes out of its way to let people in, and try to help members of the community become and stay engaged. More or less ask 'how can we help?' - and more importantly, 'how can we help without becoming just another overhead in your life?'. We live in interesting times and face a lot of challenges which we can't really predict well or prepare for. So my vision is to help this community in uncertain times, maybe think more about sustainability than growth.

What you have done within the community in the past
* FOSS4G international attendee / speaker / workshop presenter in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019
* part of the team which restarted FOSS4G conferences in 2018 with FOSS4G SotM Oceania
* part of the team founding OSGeo Oceania, founding director and member
* elected director of OSGeo Oceania
* advocate for open source tools and open mindsets in research, business and government
* charter member of OSGeo since 2018

What your interests are in terms of the board
In line with my vision - work to maintain a community which goes out of their way to let people in, and work on ways to help the community stay sustainable in terms of volunteer effort, financial support, and its environmental and ethical viewpoints.

Any things that you would like to change or introduce
I want to get a better sense of OSGeo overall before suggesting changes. I would like to keep guiding OSGeo along paths toward inclusivity and environmental responsibility, but that isn't really new - there is plenty of precedent there.

What role you would wish to fulfill on the board (if any)
I feel at this point being an ordinary board member is the best fit. I have a lot to learn!
|Info=I currently work as a postodoctoral researcher at the Norwegian Polar Institute, understanding sea ice structure and morphology in the northern Barents Sea.

I have a doctorate in surveying technology from the University of Tasmania, based on estimating sea ice thickness at high resolution by combining airborne lidar, digital photogrammetry, field observations (yes! I love to drill holes in ice!), and upward looking sonar from an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle.

I'm very strongly motivated to promote the use of open geospatial tools for developing geospatial strategies, research and development - removing barriers to serious data analysis.
