== General Advice on Mailing List Postings ==

Targeted mailing lists can be a great place to post about available jobs or resumes. But to avoid giving you or your organization a bad reputation it is important to use mailing lists in as polite a fashion as possible.

* Don't post to a mailing list that has a "no jobs, no resumes" policy. We will make some effort to keep track of these below in the "Appropriate Places to Post" but ideally you should do a bit of research on the lists you post to before posting.
* Do not post a job or resume repeatedly to the same list. If your organization has several job openings try and post them in a single post rather than sending several separate emails.
* Only post to lists very "on topic" for the job posting. For instance, don't post to the GRASS list if you don't need GRASS skills just on account you think there might be some folks there with the skills you are looking for.
* Try to minimize the total number of lists you post to. If you are posting to a job/resume to more than four or five mailing lists it is likely that many folks will get the post several times and their opinion of you will be lowered. So just select the optimal lists.

* Stay subscribed, at least for a couple weeks after posting, so you will be aware of followup or discussion about your post that happens on the list. If you think the list produces too much email to stay subscribed for a while, then don't contribute to it by posting! The price of imposing your post on the community represented by the list is being part of that community for at least a while.
* If you are posting a resume, you will do yourself a huge favor by actually participating in the mailing lists you post to. Answer questions when you can for instance. Showing knowledge in a constructive way is better for you than fancy sounding fluff on your resume.

= News Editor =

News for osgeo.org goes through a news editor that ensures some degree of consistency and appropriateness. Currently the news editor is [[User:warmerda|Frank Warmerdam]] with backup editor Tyler Mitchell. The News function is a function of the [[Website Committee]], though it is normally handled by the news editors.

= Submitting News =

Email new news items to [mailto:news_item@osgeo.org news_item@osgeo.org]. This goes to the news editors. Projects, committees or other interested parties can submit a news item to that mailing list. Then the editor (or if they are unavailable, the backup editor) would take care of formatting the item for consistency and putting it on the news page.

On occasion the news editors may also post items based on stuff they see happening without explicit direction, though this isn't the main task of the editor.

== Web Site ==

News items are published using the "News Item" content type under "Create Content" on the Drupal site. This can be done directly at http://www.osgeo.org/node/add/content_news_item as long as the editor is logged into Drupal and has appropriate permissions.

Ensure the news item title is reasonably brief as it will be in the news box in the right column. Also ensure that the date is set to reflect the date of the news item (or the date of posting if that makes more sense). The date is used to order the news items.

The news item will then be automatically posted to the OSGeo twitter account (http://twitter.com/OSGeo), through an RSS converter.

A clean plain text version of the announcement should be sent to the announce@mail.osgeo.org mailing list if the news item is significant (we aim to keep announcements down to 2-3 per week on the announce list). Please ensure that these emails follow good email styling. Less than
80 characters per line, plain text (no html!), formatted for easy reading as text, spell out urls fully with http prefixes so that url detecting email programs can turn them into followable links. Use the title of the item as the title of the email. Using your own email address as the From: is fine, but remove any personal "signature" from the email.

All announcements will need to be approved by an announce mailing list moderator. Hopefully any news editor will have an appropriate password. Approval can be done at:

Please check the "delete all messages marked defer" flag at the bottom to clear all the other junk out of the queue after you approve your new announcement.

Thanks Martin for starting this page. This is doubtlessly be very useful. Here are my first comments:
* Name of the page: land use should be in there? A better name could be "LULC Classification Systems"?
* Missing databases: at the moment, The global GlobCover LC v2.1 dataset is missing. Are you planning to include country-specific datasets or only those with worldwide coverage (CORINE is not worldwide and it's in the list, but where do we stop?)? (I have a list of publicly accessible LULC databases specific to Canada)
* What about the LCCS, FAO's [http://www.fao.org/docrep/003/x0596e/x0596e00.htm Land Cover Classification System]?
* I believe it would be pertinent to have a list of organizations/communities that focus on LULC classifications, probably in another wiki page. I feel it's important to group together as many interested parties and stakeholders as possible.

As [http://slashgeo.org slashgeo.org] co-founder, I wonder if the Canadian non-profit organization behind slashgeo.org, named Spatial Enlightenment, could be added as "like-minded" to OSGeo. We clearly are at least very compatible, but we "only" offer at this time "community-driven and ad-free news and discussions". Is that enough to be listed on this page? I also believe we're not really "regional", since our main service, the site, is accessible for anyone. What OSGeo's members think? For a contest prize we might consider some sort of OSGeo swag with the logo on it. There are some t-shirt producing places that will demand prepare and ship various kids of swag with logos on it (cafepress). I'm sure we could spring for $20-$40 of OSGeo promoting swag, though we ought to get this approved by the board. PS. Ain't March 23rd a little too close? Shouldn't the logo contest last longer to make sure the OSGeo gets the best logo possible? A time extension would allow more great logos to compete in my opinion! --[[User:Aleroux|Aleroux]] 06:12 (EST), 8 March 2006

Environment Canada] in Montréal (Québec). I participate within the GeoNET network for geospatial issues regarding the Government of Canada.
