* FREE to participate (No conference ticket required to attend)
A hackathon, using the raw data that is coming down from the TPA-1 satellite(https://www.nanosats.eu/sat/tpa-1) to the UoA Space Institute.

UOA and EOLab are working together to get this data accessible to wider NZ. It is nothing fancy, RGB and fairly low res, needs everything done to it from geo-registration upwards. But could be a cool chance for the community to get a chance to play with raw data that is coming off the first Kiwi built, owned and operated satellite.
UOA and EOLab are working together to get this data accessible to wider NZ. It is nothing fancy, RGB and fairly low res, needs everything done to it from geo-registration upwards. UOA and EOLab are working together to get this data accessible to wider NZ. It is nothing fancy, RGB and fairly low res, needs everything done to it from geo-registration upwards. UOA and EOLab are working together to get this data accessible to wider NZ. It is nothing fancy, RGB and fairly low res, needs everything done to it from geo-registration upwards. === I see that you consider numbers that I feel are a bit low for attendance (base 550, better 650, best 750). I like that you are conservative and that the budget stays strong with a low number, but I think that we should be prepared for the upper number to be at least 1000, considering the historial data[1]. Is there a reason why 750 is the higher you planned? Because even if it is very far away from me (Spain), I see it is very close to some of the most vibrant communities out there. I know you mention you can expand to more rooms if needed and that you can have a bigger plenary room, I am just curious if I'm missing some reason behind the numbers.===

We have tried to be realistic with our numbers.

During our modelling of the attendee numbers from different regions we used the historical data available from OSGeo but also took into account that for most of the previous conferences the travel distances were much shorter for the majority of attendees.

Focused marketing to the various different OSGeo regions will be critical in attracting attendees to travel to New Zealand.

A number of our committee have traveled in the past from our Oceania region to FOSS4G conferences in Europe and North America and we know first hand that the extra distance we travelled was more than worth it!

=== I like the childcare services. ===

We do too! This is something we have provided at previous FOSS4G Oceania conferences.

=== As a suggestion: are you also considering offering some tourist package for partners? ===

Yes that is something we are definitely considering and actively talking about with our tourism partners.

We have a tight relationship with Tourism New Zealand and the Auckland Convention Bureau and have already discussed how we might offer discounts and packages on many tourist related attractions and activities on offer.

We see this as been one of the ways to attract delegates to travel to New Zealand - we will not just be a conference destination but also a tourism destination before, during and after FOSS4G Auckland 2025.

=== Sometimes the codesprint is not of interest for the majority of the audience for several reasons (considered too technical, people are tired at the last day and decide to just do some tourism,...). Do you have any ideas on how to encourage participation? ===

Discussions are underway to include the following associated events as part of the codesprint community day:
* Regional QGIS User event
* HOT Open Mapping Hub (Asia Pacific) event

These events will allow those attendees who feel the code sprint to be too technical to participate in the day and feel they have gained real value and given value back.

==== Answer from Auckland LOC ====

===== We kindly ask for a statement about Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in your country. =====

''New Zealand is a vibrant, multicultural nation, enriched by the perspectives, experiences, and traditions of its diverse population. We recognize that building a truly inclusive and equitable society requires a conscious and unwavering commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).''

* '''''Diversity''''': ''We celebrate the rich tapestry of our people, acknowledging the unique contributions of different cultures, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, ages, abilities, religions, socio-economic backgrounds, and all other dimensions that shape individual identities.''

* '''''Equity''''': ''We understand that systemic and historical factors have created disparities and that true inclusion requires recognizing and addressing these barriers. We are committed to ensuring that everyone has fair opportunities to participate, thrive, and reach their full potential, regardless of their background.''

* '''''Inclusion''''': ''We strive to create a society and a workplace where everyone feels valued, respected, and has a sense of belonging. We foster an environment where diverse voices are heard, represented, and integrated into decision-making processes.''

===== What is the legal status of same-gender relationships and/or marriage in your country? Can our members travel safely with their same sex partner? What about transgender members, are they safe? =====

''New Zealand is a socially progressive country with a reputation for making many different types of people feel at home, and is often called one of the most LGBTQIA+ friendly countries in the world.''

''Most New Zealanders are open-minded, accepting and positive towards the LGBTQIA+ community, which is also sometimes known as the ‘rainbow’ community or the LGBTIQ+ community.''

''In terms of Laws, in 1993, discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation was outlawed. In 2004 New Zealand instituted civil union (for both same-sex and opposite sex couples), and in 2013 same-sex marriage was legalised. Child adoption by same-sex couples was also legalized in 2013.''

''Auckland has been rated alongside Toronto, San Francisco and London as one of the top gay-friendly cities in the world, with a remarkable pride festival.''

''In addition, our venue partner [https://www.aut.ac.nz/ AUT], is [https://www.rainbowtick.nz/ Rainbow Tick] certified.''

===== How safe is for a woman to travel alone in your country? =====

''New Zealand is a very safe place to travel (ranking 4th on the Global Peace Index), but it pays to prepare and take a few precautions so that your time here is comfortable and trouble-free... [https://www.newzealand.com/int/feature/health-and-safety/ Health and Safety]''

===== Is your venue accessible for wheelchairs and other disabilities? =====

''The AUT City Campus is a very modern academic institution and all venue areas have modern full accessibility facilities.''

''AUT are a founding partner of '''Be. Accessible''' in 2011, and since then have supported accessibility initiatives for Auckland and for the university. [http://www.beaccessible.org.nz/ Be. Accessible website]''

=== Postpone to the coming year ===

Are there any possibilities of holding the conference the following year or are there any specific reasons why you would prefer 2025?

[[User:Lucadelu|Luca Delucchi]], 29 February 2024 (CET)

==== Answer from Auckland LOC ====

''That could potentially be possible (depending on OSGeo Oceania board approval), however we would need some sort of guarantee that at a very minimum extra weighting/preference would be given to a proposal that missed out in the previous year and ideally we would prefer that if the 2 of the proposals for 2025 were of similar quality and Proposal A was awarded 2025 then Proposal B would be automatically awarded 2026.''

''The local organizing committee has secured generous commitments from our venue partner [https://www.aut.ac.nz/ AUT] for 2025. While the LOC would consider resubmitting again in 2026, we cannot guarantee the same level of support from our venue sponsor and key supporters, or the continued availability of committee volunteers. Our strong preference is for a 2025 conference.''

''The local organising committee has secured generous commitments from the hosting venue for 2025. While the LOC would consider resubmitting again in 2026, we cannot guarantee the same level of support from our venue sponsor and key supporters, or the continued availability of committee volunteers. Our strong preference is for a 2025 conference.''
