Code Sprint
Venue: Boston, Massachusetts, United States

This year, once again, we are following the old tradition of hosting a code sprint right after FOSS4G 2017.
The code sprint will be held Saturday August 19th, 2017 at District Hall (http://www.districthallboston.org/).

Participation in the code sprint is free of charge and all folks currently involved or interested in getting involved in OSGeo community projects are welcome.

This is open to all who wish to participate in one or more projects. There’s always plenty to do – it’s not all about programming. Translation, documentation, feedback, discussions, and testing are also very important for projects! Registration with the conference is not a prerequisite for participation in code sprint.

If you plan to attend, please signup in the table below so we have ample time for planning of snacks and drinks!

.

One thing we’d like to ask you: with over 200 participants anticipated, the WLAN capacity will naturally be exhausted at some point. Please be sure to avoid huge on-site downloads of data, as this could impact the work of others. Thank you!

The Codesprint Organizing Team is looking forward to your coming!

Workgroups
Getting the most of a code sprint takes a lot of prep. Please use this area to decide on a topic, sort out a plan of attack.

Please keep in mind that the FOSS4G conference is an outreach event. Some of the "new" volunteers are learning about open source for the first time, consider listing some activities (and perhaps having a mentor on hand to facilitate).

Website Training
OSGeo website training is available throughout the day, please mark your name down to attend. We ask that a member of each OSGeo committee, local chapter, geoforall lab make plans to attend. Service providers and sponsors are also welcome.

We will be reviewing both the website publication workflow and the about.yaml structured content used by the project working group.
Airport options
Airports to look at DAB - Daytona Beach International - Connects thru Atlanta on Delta, Charolette NC on American Airlines, and JFK from Jet Blue this might help with connections ideas: http://www.flydaytonafirst.com/schedule.stml

DAB is super easy in/out 5 minutes away from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, actually the college is situated off the runway for the flight school. Here are the other airports that might be cheaper on the surface, but between having to commute another hour plus the extra time dealing with the airports...DAB is probably $200 more to fly in/out of, but you save hours of transportation time and costs. Of course if you are hitting Disney World while you are here or something, then fly out of Orlando or Sanford. Or Kennedy Space Center which is an hour South, you could fly out of Melbourne FL or again Orlando. MCO is the main Orlando airport and probably has the "cheapest flights" because of the volume, but security takes a good bit of time, and typically you need to check in 90 minutes early, and traffic in Orlando can build quickly.

SFB is about 50 minutes South West and typically has good deals on Allegiant Airlines (no-frills) http://www.orlandosanfordairport.com/

MCO is about 90 minutes West in Orlando FL

JAX is about 90 minutes North in Jacksonville FL

Purpose
The GeoServer web administration console is built on top of the Wicket 1.4.x series,
which is pretty old and unmaintaned. The purpose of the sprint is to update it to Wicket 7.x, the current stable version.

Due to the large distance between the two releases and the number of backwards incompatible changes accumulated
by Wicket in the years this will require the concerted effort of a handful of developers over a few days, including the
changes to upgrade the code, and the thorough hand testing of the resulting modified interface.

We would like to extend our thanks to the following sponsors:

Gold Sponsors:
* Jody Garnett - Boundless
* Andrea Aime - GeoSolutions

Venue and dates
The code sprint will be held in Victoria BC to minimize travel costs. Boundless has offered to provide a venue (either the Boundless Victoria offices or a local technology centre).

The date is tentatively set for the week of January 18th.

This date is selected towards of the GeoServer 2.9 release cycle prior to the code freeze in February, keeping resource availability in mind.

Accommodation and costs
Participants should plan the travel, accommodation and meals.

* Depending on sponsorship level guests to Victoria will be hosted at or billeted with local community.
* At the time of writing accommodation for four guests is available (thanks to Jody Garnett and Martin Davis).

We hope to raise enough financial support to cover overseas travel, and possibly meals.

Sponsors will receive the following honors:

* Your logo at the top of this page
* Mention in all of our public communication, including GeoServer 2.9 release announcement
* Our gratitude :)

For more information on sponsorship, please contact Jody Garnett, Andrea Amie or the OSGeo Treasurer.

How to Sponsor
# Navigate to the osgeo.org website
# Click on the "Donate" button in the top right corner
# Donations are handled through PayPal, when making the donation be sure to:
#* Check the currency (USD rates are provided above)
#* Use the note field to mention the event (example "GeoServer code sprint sponsorship")
#* To make alternative arrangements contact OSGeo Treasurer
# The OSGeo Treasurer will contact both you and the event organizers to acknowledge your sponsorship
#* Please have a logo ready for your organization if you wish to be acknowledged publically
#* Your event sponsorship, at your request, can contribute towards being recognized as an OSGeo sponsor

Sponsorship Outreach
We are reaching out to organizations to see if there is interest in sponsorship:

* International organizations (OSGeo, Boundless, GeoSolutions);
* Local organizations (BC Government, Refractions, Vivid Solutions)

If there is a lot of local sponsorship we expect to drag the developers away from the task at hand and meet the local community (at a social evening or similar).

OSGeo Funding Request
The following information is requested by OSGeo Board Code_Sprint_Guidelines:
Sprint Schedule
The schedule has been broken down by day to help plan activities for those with limited availability. If you can stop by for an afternoon to help with testing, or volunteer online to test a nightly build, please let the team know.

In scope:

* Use of Java 8 syntax to reduce wicket boiler plate code
* Mike Pumphrey will be on hand to update user guide as each screen is completes manual testing

Out of scope:

* Changing the codebase to use a different library (the effort would be at least an order of magnitude bigger)
* Improve the behavior of the current UI (we can make improvements at the end, once everything works, if time remains)

Monday 18 Jan

Purpose
Bring together project members to make decisions and tackle larger geospatial
problems as in previous years:

* Vienna (2014)
* Boston (2013)
* Island Wood (Seattle) (2012)
* Montreal (2011)
* New York City (2010)
* Toronto (2009))

While past code sprints have targeted
members of the "C Tribe" (e.g., MapServer, GRASS, GDAL, Proj, PostGIS,
MapGuide, OpenLayers), other open source geospatial tribes are welcome to join the sprint.

The event organizer, Azavea, is also proposing that this be a joint code sprint with the Eclipse Foundation's LocationTech working group. There are several developers
that work on projects associated with both OSGeo and LocationTech, and we believe
it be an opportunity for some healthy exchange and collaboration.

Venue
Potential Workspace
Azavea's office is in Center City Philadelphia and we can host up to 40 people. However, based on the number of people attending in Vienna, we would like to plan for more. We currently expect to use the following venue:

Friends Center - http://www.friendscentercorp.org/ - Conference Center operated by the Society of Friends; has wifi, but not enough bandwidth, so would have to push for augmentation. We will occupy the Cherry St Room, which includes some breakout rooms around it. Friends Center is in a central location, close to public transit and has space for 75 - 100 people. It is located at 1501 Cherry Street, Philadelphia, PA 19102.

We may also use Azavea's office and other location for social events.

Philadelphia
The three potential sites are all walking distance to:
* Reading Terminal Market
* Chinatown
* City Hall
* Franklin Institute
* Old City
* Liberty Bell
* Washington Square
* Rittenhouse Square
* Philadelphia Museum of Art (and other museums listed below

Dates and Times
Dates:
* Welcome event: evening of Mon, Feb 9
* Sprint: Tues, Feb 10 - Fri, Feb 13 (4 days)

FAQ
* Is the Philadelphia Code Sprint just a coding event?
** Yes, a coding and documentation event. It is a working session for people who are already participants in open source projects.
* Will it be possible to present new projects during this event?
** No, this is not a presentation-oriented event. People will get together in small groups and work on areas of mutual interest within their projects.
