CodeSprint
Venue: Bonn, Germany

This year, once again, we are following the old tradition of hosting a codesprint on the FOSS4G. More precisely, we offer a setting so that individual projects can meet for their codesprint. Since projects benefit from each other as well, the codesprint will naturally be held conjointly at one place.
Unfortunately, circumstances have forced us to divide the codesprint timetable-wise.

The first part is scheduled to take place directly before the conference, the second immediately after. The first two and a half days start on Sunday, August 21, 2016 at around noon and are scheduled to end on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 (open end). The second part starts in the morning of Saturday, August 27, 2016 and ends on Sunday at 12 pm.

We are happy to have found a really awesome location for you. Codesprint and accommodations are combined in one hall. Check out http://www.basecamp-bonn.com/ for details about the venue.
Working zones will be created for you in the breakfast area and hallways. There’s the option of finding relatively inexpensive sleeping accommodations in train sleeping cars, camping buses, classic cars and more. Additionally, an outdoor area is available for you to enjoy Bonn’s summer weather in August, while working. Healthy and not-so-healthy catering of drinks and snacks will be provided by us. Participation in codesprint is free of charge. However, overnight stays will have to be reserved and paid for by you.

Another hint: the BaseCamp is within walking distance from the conference venue (WCCB) and has good access to public transportation – the Icebreaker takes place here, too.
You see, it’s worthwhile booking here!

As the accommodations are available to all FOSS4G participants, we will make an effort to make advance booking possible for you a few days ahead, to ensure you have the opportunity to sleep on-site and wrap up the evenings jointly. For that, it’s necessary for you to sign up (https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/FOSS4G_2016_Code_Sprint) and leave your email address so that we can contact you immediately accomodation booking is available. We need your sign-up for the planning of snacks and drinks, too!

This is open to all who wish to participate in one or more projects. There’s always plenty to do – it’s not all about programming. Translation, documentation, feedback, discussions, testing – all this is also important for project so everyone is cordially invited to attend the codesprints! Registration with the conference is not a prerequisite for participation in codesprint.

One thing we’d like to ask you: with an approx. 120 participants anticipated, the WLAN capacity will naturally be exhausted at some point. Please be sure to avoid huge on-site downloads of data, as this could impact the work of others. Thank you!

The Codesprint Organizing Team is looking forward to your coming!

The Shootout that did not happen.
The Benchmark ... that did not happen.
The WPS comparison:
How can we do more?
How can we do better?
We need dedication. Throughout the year. Involve research and academia.
Involve sponsors.
Make a committee?
</pre>

Please discuss, add ideas, etc.:

A few points to discuss (in no particular order):

The goods:
* There's great interest for a benchmark from the general population, just because it's interesting to see projects have a friendly fight or simply because it is somewhat informative.
* From the project developpers point of view, it's really helpful and all developpers involved could see huge benefits out of it.
* From a marketing point of view, the winning teams (those at the top of the chart) have one more tool to sell their project.

The bads
* This exercise has become (ie always been) very heavy for the developpers involved. In my sense, the 2010 was such a success because the people didn't knew in what they were getting into. I don't think we can ask the propretary vendor to get back for a similar exercise.
* Project champions all told us that they were burnt out at the end. This is not good.
* The scope (speed) may be to narrow as a yearly subject to keep being interesting to all party involved. (Not sure of this one)
* The benefits of having a FOSS4G oriented exercise is not that appealing to projects. Do projects want more from this time and energy investment than a cool presentation with charts.

The potential solutions:
* The time required to integrate the benchmark exercise should be reduce for this to work. We can't ask Jeff or Andrea (To only mention those two) to spend 4 months (or more) of their (unfunded) time on this.
* We need sponsors for both hardware and money.
* We need a Sprint to get all project champions together and get this out of the door in a week
* This could/should a service offered to participating project where they can run the benchmark and see the results. This would help to see how projects evolve performance wise over time. Thinking about it, this would make a really interesting presentation.
* The test case needs to be kept at minimal. Start small. Render 10 million points with no style for example. I would see between one and three tests the first year so the steps to join are not an issue.
* We may have to remove the hardcore tuning optimisation from the benchmark if that's what is taking time.

Other ideas (Replace those that you don't agree with):
* It would be cool to have a simple testsuite that anyone could run on any computer and see the performance of their project. Just like I have testsuite to test my video card, I would be able to test my MapServer installation. Maybe the benchmark could become only that...
* Our potential sponsors are not projects, but institution or company using the software (Ordnance Survey for example). This is the people we have to aim when planning what the exercise should become. What are their benefits out of this? Is it to be able to chose the right software for the right job? Maybe we could allow sponsors to define their usecase and add that to the test suite.

Code Sprint - what's that?
A code sprint is about getting a group together to work on Open Source software, sitting around a table and sharing ideas. It's not just about writing code, as you know a project has many needs including documentation, testing, and providing feedback. What a better way to give feedback and give back to the project that you love than to spend a day with the project's developers. There are roles needed to be filled, no matter what your expertise.

With such a short timeframe (one day) you should probably use this page to set a specific goal for your project. But don't worry, if all you get done is actually sitting at the same table with the project's developers and talking about the next release, that is also great&nbsp;:)

The day after the main conference (Sunday 22nd September) has been set aside for the Code Sprint. There is also a plan to provide facilities throughout the event in the main venue.

We also have a hackathon running on 17th & 18th September which is also free to attend. See the geohack pages for details.
Introduction
During the FOSS4G2010 conference in Barcelona, Spain, there will be conference rooms available for people to hold Breakout Sessions (aka Birds-of-a-Feather).

Breakout Sessions sessions are unstructured timeslots where people can self-organise themselves to discuss topics of interest.

This year, Breakout Sessions sessions will be held on Wednesday 8th September (and possibly at other times as well - depending on interest). A number of rooms will be available. Most popular sessions will get bigger rooms.

Room allocation to be determined

Introduction
During the FOSS4G2009 conference in Sydney, Australia, there will be conference rooms available for people to hold Birds-of-a-Feather sessions.

Birds-Of-A-Feather sessions are unstructured timeslots where people can self organise themselves to discuss topics of interest.

This year, Birds of a Feather sessions will be held on Thursday 22nd October.

A number of rooms are available. First ones in get the rooms.

Organising Contact
* Bruce Bannerman, Tyler Mitchell

Timeslots Available
At this stage, each room is scheduled for one hour between 1615 to 1715.

The rooms will be available for longer, however remember that the FOSS4G Harbour Cruise Dinner starts at 1900.

If we get a lot of demand, we may need to reduce the time that each room is available for.
This will allow us to share the resources between more people.

Rooms Available
* Parkside G01, capacity 70 people
* Parkside G02, capacity 70 people
* Parkside G03, capacity 80 people
* Parkside G04, capacity 170 people
* Parkside G05, capacity 50 people

Please note:

We are currently looking at additional options for places to run the BOF sessions in.

Rooms will be allocated to BOF sessions closer to the event.

Timetable
Below is a summary of the BOFs and when/where they will be run. Contact Tyler or Bruce for any questions or changes. Times and rooms may change - changes will be posted on announcement boards during the event.
You can use this page to organize your BOF session:
* create a section below for your BOF
* have people edit this page to indicate they will be attending
* if you need a bigger room than that which has been assigned to you, let Tyler or Bruce know
* you must provide a contact person who is managing the meeting
* also make your description as clear as possible, for many attendees it will be the only thing they read before choosing one

BOF sessions
FOSS4G in Government
To start the ball rolling, seeing that everyone else is sitting back
and waiting for everyone else: some potential discussion points:

* The UK Government's policy on Open Source It would be good to get a UK person to talk to this.
* How can governments exploit open source spatial:
* Implement based on Open Standards.
* The GeoNetwork example where we all need a Metadata entry tool and catalogue.
** We all don't want to pay for the same development, but share / pool resources.
** how do we coordinate this work, while working sensitively with Open Source communities who own the code base and may not want to go in the same direction that we do. This includes issues relating to working with Project Steering Committees etc.
** We can't expect communities to do our work for free. Therefore we will need to either engage our own people or consultancies to do the work. The consultancies could come from within the community from anywhere around the world, until we build up our own local communities. This could create procurement problems.
* The need for governments to engage with Open Source communities at all levels, not just as developers.
* The need to allow employees to participate within OS Communities as part of their day to day jobs: i.e. we need to build up our technical skills.
* The need to treat OS on a level playing field with proprietary solutions. That will mean looking at the Solution life cycle (See the new UK OS policy).
* Experiences in other countries:
** What is working.
** What is not working.
* Given national and international experiences of all, what models will work for Governments to break down the perceived barriers and myths associated with FOSS
* A plan worth considering / discussion is a proposal by the South Australian Government to implement an Australian Open Technology Foundationwhich is currently before Australian Governments, selected ICT / Open Technology Vendors and Academia for in principle support.
** Would a foundation acting as the 'common glue' assist in these endeavours
** focus on openness to improve interoperability, independence, resilience and flexibility in ICT operations
** Authorative registry of open technologies in use in Governments around Australia with appropriate learnings and contacts
** Facilitate sharing of resources, technologies and knowledge
** Link with existing programs underway nationally and internationally to share information to all
** Link with international Open Technology Groups
INSPIRE Data Profile Support in FOSS4G
We want to discuss an approach towards the upcoming INSPIRE data specifications and how to best support them in our open source software. It is important for the FOSS community to come up with a story that is more than just "Yes that is possible but contract us first".
This BOF is to seek feedback from those of you that see the same need and to investigate if some work has already been done, seek input in how we would best approach this, if there are options for a Europe wide collaboration on this etcetera.

Questions and/or points of discussions are:
* Considering that clients would like to see a product that does some of the INSPIRE data conversions out of the box, how do you approach this when usually we only implement things after they have been contracted? (in contrast to proprietary software where often an investment is made that is earned back through licensing schemes)
* Have any application schema's already been implemented in some form by you in GEOFOSS?
* What tools have you used or do you want to use (e.g. ogr, Talend, deegree, GeoServer)
* How would we go about joined development, or maybe even joined investment etcetera?

OSGeo Labs Projects
Purpose
OSGeo Labs is a place to list Open Source Geospatial Software that hasn't reached Incubation status. OSGeo Labs aims to:
* Help projects progress to OSGeo Incubation.
* Advertise projects and find like minded developers.
* Merge with similar projects. A project has a greater chance of reaching Incubation when integrated with similar projects.

This is the right place to start submitting your project so other OSGeo members can review them and send you feedback.

Criteria
Projects should only list themselves in OSGeo Labs if they follow the OSGeo Incubation principles.
# The code is under an OSI approved license (data & doc projects need to specify their choice for a type of license).
# The project is willing to keep code clear of encumbrances
# The project is "geospatial", or directly supports geospatial applications.
# The project hopes to become a graduated OSGeo project, or have reasons why incubation is not appropriate.

Becoming a Labs Project
Becoming an OSGeo Labs should be easy and encouraged to all project that respond to criterias above. All project that use the OSGeo infrastructure or that wants to assign their copyright to OSGeo should add themselves below.

Pending Incubation
Projects which have self assessed themselves ready for incubation and waiting for a mentor: List from OSGeo trac

Stable Projects
* ...

Young or Experimental Projects
* GeoFunctions Geo Functions sourceforge page
* Geoinformatica OSGeo trac site

Responsibilities
OSGeo Labs aims to have minimal red tape to reduce overhead.

Project Champion
The Project Champion is responsible for:
# Strongly recommended: Read Karl Fogel's book on Open Source Software - How to Run a Successful Free Software Project
# Ensure the project complies with OSGeo principles by addressing the #Criteria above.
# Create a home page for the project. The OSGeo wiki is recommended for this page. A page should answer the OSGeo #Criteria.
# List the project under the appropriate heading on this page.
# Announce and discuss the project on the OSGeo Discuss email list.
# Move the project toward incubation.

Incubation Committee
The OSGeo Incubation Committee is responsible for:
# Investigate, then possibly remove a project from OSGeo Labs if it doesn't follow OSGeo Labs #Criteria.
# Periodically (at least annually), review projects in OSGeo labs and remove projects which have "died" or don't follow OSGeo Labs #Criteria.

Helpful Resource
# Get your project a mailing-list and a bug tracker
## SourceForge provides code repository, mailing list and bug tracker services. (contact [mailto:sunburned.surveyor@gmail.com Landon Blake] to get help on SourceForge service)
# Approach the Spotlights editors about doing a spotlight interview about your project.

Assigning Copyright to OSGeo
All graduated OSGeo projects must assign their copyright to OSGeo. A young project can assign its copyright to OSGeo by:
* Asking the right person and doing it
* Having a graduated OSGeo project mentor yours

Using OSGeo infrastructure
It's possible to use OSGeo infrastructure to host your project or to have a trac and subversion server. You can get help if your project respond to criterias above and ask the right person for it.

Disclosure
OSGeo or any of its affiliates do not take responsibility or endorse any of the software listed here. OSGeo doesn't guarantee the integrity of the code or any other aspect of the above softwares.
We have chosen a mid-North American location because this code sprint is targeting members of the "C Tribe" (eg, Mapserver, GRASS, GDAL, Proj, PostGIS, MapGuide) and many members of the "C Tribe" are clustered in the area. Toronto is also a major travel hub, for sprinters traveling from afar. Other tribes are welcome to join the sprint, of course, but we hope that "C Tribe" members will give this event special consideration.

Sponsors
We have received support from five sponsors, each providing a $500 sponsorship that will be put towards venue, internet and lunch costs.

Thanks to our sponsors!
