Bolsena Code Sprint 2010

After two successful years, we'll continue the OSGeo "hacking" event in Bolsena in an [http://www.conventobolsena.org/ Italian monastery] ([http://tinyurl.com/2t6zby see map location], and videos: [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wrZrK64UIw 2008-video] and [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mxox3AsjH6Q 2009-video]). The monastery is overlooking Lago Bolsena and offers space to about 25 people in small bedrooms :-) . It is one of the coolest places for such an event. Quiet, isolated, simple and serene. There's a good wireless and wired internet connection, further improved this year. It should be perfect for SVN, IRC and mail. Have a look yourself, including looking at the photo gallery.
For what the food concerns, we will have a cook who will take care of us :-) . There's a large dining space, but we will eat outside overlooking the lake if weather permits (very likely in June).

The all inclusive cost will be 500 Euro per person for the full week. You can stay all seven days and food (breakfast, lunch and dinner) is included in the price. As last year, we will go out for a city visit and a dinner on one of the evenings (also included).

The event will take place during the whole week (7 days), although the emphasis will probably be Monday to Friday for most participants.

=== How to arrive to the Monastery ===

The closest airports are the Roma airports (Ciampino and Fiumincino).

From Rome to the monastery there is 135 km aproximately.

There is no railway to Bolsena.

From Fiumicino to Rome you can take the train [http://www.adr.it/content.asp?Subc=1363&L=1&idMen=731 METROPOLITANO FR1].

From Rome you can take a bus (cotral http://www.cotralspa.it/ENG/capolinea.asp) to Viterbo and other bus from viterbo to Bolsena.

Monday to Friday there is a bus each hour but Sunday there are very few buses.

From Bolsena main street to the Monastery is aproximately 1 km.

It could be interesting to rent a private bus or several cars to move from Rome to the Monastery and from the Monastery to Rome.

== Planned Upgrade ==

On [http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?month=6&day=20&year=2009&hour=21&min=0&sec=0&p1=179 Saturday June 20th, at 9:00pm EST] it is planned that Howard Butler, Frank Warmerdam and possibly others will take down trac services for an upgrade from sqlite2 to sqlite3 for the backend database in an effort to reduce the persistent Trac problems with database locking, and slow response. Changes under consideration:

* Upgrade to use sqlite3
* Upgrade to the most recent version of Trac.

There has also been some discussion of migrating to postgres as the backend, but it appears we are not seriously considering that at this time. It does appear we will attempt to upgrade all instances in one pass rather than operate two versions of trac+sqlite on the same system.

Coordination will take place in #telascience. Though only primary admins will have access to osgeo1 for the upgrade work, other assistance to test results could be helpful.

Service unavailability may last as long as 4 hours.

We have had problems with trac spam when ticket create and ticket modify permissions were set to anonymous (the default). To get around this most (all?) instances have been changed to require authenticated users to do these actions.

But some projects strongly desire to support anonymous ticket creation and modification and at some point this might be viable using image captcha technology to keep out the spammers. A Trac plugin for this is apparently under development, and described at:

There are plans for new/rewritten cartographic tools (map composer) for QGIS, as well as for GRASS. We suggest to develop a joint library for the various functions which could be shared across GRASS, QGIS and other projects with bindings to Qt, Python etc. The GUI part will be done within the individual software projects, while this project focuses on standard libraries or command line utilities.

Perhaps we could implement the core in C++, but provide a high level C API for applications and environments wanting to drive the library. C++ is a strong implementation language, but presenting a C API to the outside world reduces complexity calling from other languages or compiler versions and reduces "interface fragility".

* Python bindings?

There has been talk on the [http://gmt.soest.hawaii.edu/ GMT] mailing list about Python bindings to the core C API. Since GMT already has a wealth of routines for plotting directly to PS|EPS format files, this route may give developers a great head-start. There has been [http://casoilresource.lawr.ucdavis.edu/drupal/node/561 some work] on the integration of GRASS and GMT in the past, with [http://grass.gdf-hannover.de/wiki/GRASS_AddOns several user-submitted modules].

== Output Formats ==

What output formats do we want to target. I think at the core this question comes down to whether we want to render everything to a raster format or whether we wish to preserve linework, and text in non-raster form. That is, whether output output is a raster format, or a raster+vector+text format like postscript/pdf.

If a cartographic product is the objective, I think selection of an output format like PDF makes a lot of sense, but it does make interactive composition more complicated and it is possible we have limited pdf/postscript development expertise in our developer community (the GMT developers may be of help here...).

What about the possibility of exporting SVG and using Inkscape for cartographic styling and design? Inkscape is written in C++ and already has a wealth of vector graphics functionality. You could also consider using Scribus for map layout. I believe Scribus is also written in C++. Why implement the great functionality that already exists in open source programs?

Coming from the Web Mapping angle it will be interesting to be able to acquire OGC WMS maps with a pixel sizes < 0.28 mm (which is the current standard of ~ 72 or 90 dpi). This option has been suggested as a change request and is currently being discussed. It will allow to compose high resolution print maps also using OGC WMS.

There will be code in GRASS, QGIS, the Python Cartographic Library (http://zcologia.org/cartography) and other sources which could be integrated (check license compatibility). Please indicate precisely where to find the source code, license, programming language. Please keep in mind that this is underlying library, not the graphical user interface.

The communication that happens from face to face hacking usually lasts the project for a year or more. You see this a lot in projects like Drupal etc...

We will have an OSGeo "hacking" event in an [http://www.conventobolsena.org/ Italian monastry] ([http://tinyurl.com/2t6zby here]). The monastry is overlooking Lago Bolsena and offers space to about 25 people in small bedrooms :-) . Its probably one of the coolest places for such an event. Quiet, isolated, simple and serene. There's a good wireless and wired internet connection, although I wouldn't bet my hand on it if we all start to download satellite images. It should be perfect for SVN, IRC and mail. Have a look yourself, including looking at the photo gallery.

The cost will be about 200 Euro per person for the week.

For what the food concerns, there will be a cook who will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner for 30 Euro per person per day. There's a large dining space, but we will eat outside overlooking the lake if weather permits (very likely in June).

We'll discuss other technicalities as they come up, i.e. assistance if you need to rent a car, organize to travel together, public transport etc... Please feel free to use this WIKI page for that or create a sub page.

The closest airports are the Roma airports (Ciampino and Fiumincino).

From Rome to the monastry there is 135 km aproximately.

There is no railway to Bolsena.

From Rome you can take a bus (cotral http://www.cotralspa.it/ENG/capolinea.asp) to Viterbo and other bus from viterbo to Bolsena.

Monday to Friday there is a bus each hour but Sunday there are very few buses.

From Bolsena main street to the Monastry is aproximately 1 km.

It could be interesting to rent a private bus or several cars to move from Rome to the Monastry and from the Monastry to Rome.

Friends of mine take care of the place which is overlooking Lago Bolsena and offers space to 25 people in small bedrooms :-) . Its probably one of the coolest places for such an event. Quiet, isolated, simple and serene. There's a good wireless and wired internet connection, although I wouldn't bet my hand on it if we all start to download satellite images. It should be perfect for SVN, IRC and mail.

The cost would be about 200 Euro per person for the week (food not included, we can organize that separately). There's a large kitchen and large dining space. Obviously, since the weather most likely permits, we would eat outside overlooking the lake. Have a look yourself, including looking at the photo gallery.

Subversion was upgraded to version 1.4.3 (30 Jan. 2007) to reduce the repository locking problem if ctl-c used to end a checkout.

If the repository locks the following command should be used to recover the repository:

$ sudo chown -R apache:apache /var/www/svn/repos/<repo_name>

In most cases this will work in the odd case that you are waiting a very long time for the command to run then apache may have to be restarted to drop anything accessing the repository and preventing the repository from being recovered

$ sudo chown -R apache:apache /var/www/svn/repos/<repo_name>

= Authz Rules =

By default we use one LDAP "group" for an entire subversion repository. Everyone in that group has commit priveledges on the whole repository. However, some project desire to have subgroups. For instance a core commiter group with update on the trunk source tree, and a broader contributor group that has commit access in a subarea, such as /sandbox. We accomplish this using an "authz" file to hold the rules for the respository, and multiple LDAP groups.

A project wishing this will need to prepare an authz template file looking something like:

The authz.tmpl files need to be named exactly authz.tmpl and place in the corresponding project repository directory, /var/www/svn/repos/gdal for instance. Make sure the file is owned by apache.apache.

The corresponding /etc/httpd/conf.d/subversion/project.conf file should look something like the following. Note the removal of <LimitExcept> stuff, and reference to any specific ldap group as well as the AuthzSVNAccessFile.

The LDAP groups should be created as ''groupOfNames'' nodes below the ou=svn element using PHPLDAPAdmin. Make sure the membership is pre-initialized with an administrator for the project so they can do future updates themselves. Try to keep the names of the groups clearly related to the base project. eg. gdal, gdal_sandbox, gdal_documentors.

== Notes ==

The script /root/scripts/ldap_update_authz.py script is run by an os.system() call out of ldap_group.py on any successful group update. It will scan for /var/www/svn/repos/*/authz.tmpl.

There are lots of things that can go wrong in the script which has poor error checking, and it might only manifest as some or all of the authz file no longer getting regenerated. So when an authz.tmpl file is put in place, or updated do a test update and verify that all authz files are being updated (check timestamps).

Anyone (on osgeo1) can run ldap_update_authz.py, but if authz files are created by someone that apache.apache can't delete, problems may ensue...

dnesnim doktorum pomalu umira mozek a zrejme uz se to ani neda zastavit, tolikrat se v posleni dobe setkavam se situacemi, kdy doktori nejsou schopni vubec zjistit, co dotycnemu je a jen neustale opakovane zkouseji dalsi a dalsi prasky, az nejaky treba zabere, cit je nahrazovan hamiznosti, rozum tuposti...

jiste si snadno dokazete v predchozich odstavcich zamenit za doktora informatika a uvidite, ze rozdilu mnoho neni, dnesni informatik se podle meho nazoru pomalu ale jiste riti do stejne dusevni zahuby, do ktere se uz drive dostali doktori, stava se z nej bezduchy prostrednik s vybornymi znalostmi seznamu prasku, dobrymi vztahy s farmaceutickymi firmami a s prazdnym prostorem v sekci napady a inovace, v cechach to zrejme plati dvojnasob...

jiste mi muzete namitnout, ze je to vse nadsazene a velmi zobecnene, urcite se i dnes najdou doktori, kteri sve praci rozumi, a take leky, ktere opravdu pomohou, to je fakt, ale trend je myslim celkem jasny...

zaslechl jsem vcera, ze se planuje (nebo snad, ze uz dokonce probehlo), zalozeni gis-open-source komunity, jsem tim velmi nadsen! pevne verim, ze prave takovato iniciativa muze byt jednim z impulzu, ktery ceske informatiky muze zachranit, verim take, ze prave z takove komunity, a ji podobnych, mohou plynout myslenky hluboke i vzletne, ktere ve forme prispevku pozvednou uroven i takovych konferenci jako je treba ta prave skoncena...

je treba hledat a podporovat budouci doktory, kteri telu i duchu zase dobre porozumi a budou vedet kam sahnout, aby vse dobre fungovalo, aby se soukoli zase rozebehlo, vzdycky bude dost obchodniku s prasky, ale rozum by jen proto, ze je to trend, nemel vymrit...

== Možné společné téma a nástroj ==

Jako možné společné téma zatím krystalizuje práce s rastry v PostGIS a PostGIS obecně jako datový sklad.

Včera Tonda říkal, že hlavním tématem sdružení je sdružovat se. A druhým tématem je propagace OS GIS, tak aby se nástroje, které my používáme dostaly k běžným uživatelům GIS. Tato dvě témata jsou určitě to co bychom dělat měli a dnes už děláme. Síla sdružení je v tom, že teď už můžeme propagovat cíleněji a s určitou podporou (minimálně psychologickou), že za námi stojí určitá skupina lidí se stejným zájmem.

== Who should attend ==

* Developers that need to meet the community and discuss issues about a particular project.
* Developers that have the feeling that knowing the different projects communities gives added value and often saves from doing things twice
* Power users that are able to contribute documentation, decend bugdescriptions and perhaps even help to fix minor issues.
* Web experts that want to contribute to their favorite projects by helping to set up the web page.

== Aims of the SFScon 2007 Code Sprint ==

For developers:
* bring different projects to know each other and build up some standard interaction
* let the teams of each project meet, discuss, design and code together fulltime and non-remotely for a few days (this often pushes projects more than months of email and IRC working)
* bugfixing

For Power Users:
* the possibility to meet the developer comunity and help (and be helped) with documentation and translation
* the possibility to propose important bugfixes (prior documented and reproductable, only power user accepted)

For everyone out there:
* Collaborate on the creation of a free dataset by wandering in an ordered way through a defined region with GPS. The dataset should contain as many data as possible, as for example the dataset of the [http://www.grassbook.org/grasslocations/nc_spm_06_contents.html grassbook] does. Moreover climatic and hydrologic/hydraulic data should be integrated in order to support different analyses.

== The Location ==

The code sprint will be organized as a post-event of the South Tyrol Free Software Conference 2007 held in Merano (BZ), Italy.
