This is where Cameron and I might have a difference of opinion and given his track record of getting things done I take his views quite seriously and respectfully. But I my concern is related to Yochai Benkler's (Wealth of Networks) idea of "task granularity." But I think we will get more people to step up to do a webinar if we reduce the amount of work they have to do up front to put the webinar together. Fine or smaller tasks will be undertaken more easily than tasks that take more work. I worry that forcing a template on presenters will reduce their willingness to participate.

[[Webinar option 1. OSGeo Colloquium Series]]. This would be talk series where people in OSGeo edu or affiliated with OSGeo projects can present some of their current work with people interested in education as their target audience. The motivation for presentation is that people WANT to do it for their own reasons. The idea here would be that people on this list with expertise in a topic and interest to present to the community might step up and offer to give a talk on a topic of their choosing. I can't see a template working here and this is what I have had in my mind. The benefit of this is that it would get us online and talking as a group and motivations would be because presenters want to tell others about what they are doing. I think Helena's proposal on 3D visualization or my proposal on my open source study are examples of this kind of webinar.

[[Webinar option 2. Introduction to OSGeo projects]]. I think this could be a great step forward for our group. For example, I have a research project where I'd like to post, periodically, data points on a map on a webpage. I think Open Layers would be a way for me to do this, but I don't know anything about putting up a page with an open layers-based map. I'd really like to see a presentation by a knowledgable person on what you can do with Open Layers. I could see potentially a template here being established, and perhaps it is the Live DVD tutorial done as a recording, as Cameron suggested a few months back. I also don't know if a standard template could be created for the different projects -- would the template look the same for QGIS compared to Geoserver or PostGIS, for example?

[[Webinar option 3. Other relevant topics]]. Stephan's idea of a webinar on GIS licenses would be an example. Or a topic on FOSS4G open data standards. Or a presentation related to the "Geospatial Technology Competency Model (GTCM) that the GeoTech Center is working with.

With the unfortunate cancellation of [[FOSS4G 2012]] the community has been left with a conference hole. While there are regional conferences and [[FOSS4G 2013]] there to fill some of the gap we're still left without a proper venue to present this year's product updates, new ideas, and research to the OSGEO community. I propose FOSS4GV, a virtual conference, in addition to the existing regional conferences.

== FOSS4GV 2012 in Cyberspace ==
The idea is simple, a series of presentations and discussions held virtually. While this doesn't provide the socializing, workshops, code sprints, and other aspects of a full conference, it's at least a way to talk about your latest achievements and foster a real-time discussion.

== How so we make it happen? ==
I'm willing to act as the organizer but I'll need help. I've never organized a conference (real or virtual) so I'll need help getting presenters and marketing the event. Please contact me if you are interested in helping. @retrev on twitter or tclarke at ball dot com

== When will this happen? ==
Since FOSS4G normally occurs in the fall, I think we should plan on running the event around the same time as the original FOSS4G. (perhaps a few weeks later to give everyone more time) The event would be much shorter than a normal conference. Either a one day even or perhaps a couple of afternoons.

== Where will this happen? ==
I'm open to suggestions but I'm leaning towards Google+ Hangouts On Air. It's free, automatically saves the talks to Youtube, and works well with a large number of viewers.

== What will happen? ==
This will depend on who we can get to present. I'd like to see a couple of tracks running simultaneously but if there are not enough presenters, we can run a single track. I expect half hour presentation and q&a sessions will probably work out.
Should there be an Ignite! session? Technically, I think this would work just fine but I'm not sure how Ignite! will work without a live audience for feedback.
I'm not sure about a full academic track since we'd need peer review and publication (even virtual) for that to work well. Does anyone know how far Beijing got through the submissions? If there were already some academic papers accepted or in-process we could start with those.

== Free meditation and relaxing movements sessions ==

There are so many interesting people and ideas at FOSS4G that I’ve found it can be really helpful to have a quiet, meditative moment or two to let it all sink in. The intention is to help one release stress and relax muscles that commonly become tight from computer/desk work, travel, carrying bags.. the common issues that tend to manifest at a week-long conference! I’ve been leading meditation sessions for co-workers at MIT and receiving very positive feedback about how helpful they are.

My plan is to hold a few 30-minute, sessions of relaxed meditative breathing and gentle movements during the FOSS4G conference at the following times:

*Wed. 8 pm
*Thurs 5:30 pm
*Friday 5 pm - after the Annual General Meeting

These sessions are available to anyone, including people with no prior experience with any movement styles, those who do not feel particularly flexible, and folks who are in their work/meeting clothes. Anyone interested in starting the day with some tai chi and chi gong, let's meet in the Sheraton pool area (5th floor of the Tower building) at 6:00 am. If there's inclement weather, let's meet in the lobby of the Sheraton. == Free meditation and relaxing movements sessions ==

There are so many interesting people and ideas at FOSS4G that I’ve found it can be really helpful to have a quiet, meditative moment or two to let it all sink in. The intention is to help one release stress and relax muscles that commonly become tight from computer/desk work, travel, carrying bags.. the common issues that tend to manifest at a week-long conference! I’ve been leading meditation sessions for co-workers at MIT and receiving very positive feedback about how helpful they are.

My plan is to hold a few 30-minute, sessions of relaxed meditative breathing and gentle movements during the FOSS4G conference at the following times:

*Wed. 8 pm
*Thurs 5:30 pm
*Friday 5 pm - after the Annual General Meeting

These sessions are available to anyone, including people with no prior experience with any movement styles, those who do not feel particularly flexible, and folks who are in their work/meeting clothes. == Free meditation and relaxing movements sessions ==

There are so many interesting people and ideas at FOSS4G that I’ve found it can be really helpful to have a quiet, meditative moment or two to let it all sink in. The intention is to help one release stress and relax muscles that commonly become tight from computer/desk work, travel, carrying bags.. the common issues that tend to manifest at a week-long conference! I’ve been leading meditation sessions for co-workers at MIT and receiving very positive feedback about how helpful they are.

My plan is to hold a few 30-minute, sessions of relaxed meditative breathing and gentle movements during the FOSS4G conference at the following times:

*Wed. 8 pm
*Thurs 5:30 pm
*Friday 5 pm - after the Annual General Meeting

These sessions are available to anyone, including people with no prior experience with any movement styles, those who do not feel particularly flexible, and folks who are in their work/meeting clothes. A code sprint is about getting a group together to work on Open Source software, sitting around a table and sharing ideas. It's not just about writing code, as you know a project has many needs including documentation, testing, and providing feedback. What a better way to give feedback and give back to the project that you love than to spend a day with the project's developers. There are roles needed to be filled, no matter what your expertise.

With such a short timeframe (one day) you should probably use this page to set a specific goal for your project. But don't worry, if all you get done is actually sitting at the same table with the project's developers and talking about the next release, that is also great :)
