I've been a consumer of Mapserver and supporting tools for years. I have never had much interest in getting down into the weeds of developing it. I was content to use the tools and accept the progress that was made.

I remember having a conversation in Victoria with one of the developers (can't remember who) about an enhancement I wanted to scalebars. The conversation quickly got into way more specification, implementation, and contract detail than I cared about. I had cash ready to support it but it just felt like too much effort to get the work done, so I never followed through.

The logo/sponsor thing on the OSGeo home page was useless to me. I'm not a Mapserver consultant, and there's no reason for me to pay for presence there--I would just be advertising to peers.

The codesprint sponsorship feels like a way to throw money in the direction of development that will benefit me (and the community too, of course), without having to become a program manager. I'm happy to trust the people involved to continue to do good engineering, to say no to bad ideas and feature requests, and to generally improve the state of the tools. I'm sure there must be other organizations who would like to support development, but would like a similarly frictionless way to do it.

Tyler Mitchell had a major role in previous efforts to prepare and publish the journal. His absence has created what I feel is an important void.

Some of this void deals with practical issues. For example:

A codesprint is an in-person gathering of developers for doing some serious coding, writing documentation, and having face-to-face project collaboration. (It is not aimed at training, presentations, workshops, etc.)

The OSGeo community has two annual "big" sprints (annual, multiproject, multiday events of more than 20 people): the Bolsena Sprint and the North American Sprint. A number of project-oriented sprints also occur, such as the one-day sprint associated with the FOSS4G conference, single-project sprints such as have been held for GRASS, QGIS and uDig, and very regional (chapter-level) sprints.

Codesprints are clearly within the scope of OSGeo's mission, and so the Foundation should in general support them.  This page provides some guidelines for deciding whether a given sprint should be supported, and if so in what fashion.

When deciding to support a sprint, OSGeo should follow these guidelines: 

*OSGeo should not be the sole source of funding for the event.  OSGeo prefers sprints to be at least partially funded by third-party sponsors, and may choose to provide funding "matching" the amount of sponsorship money raised.
*OSGeo understands that some events may require up-front costs, e.g. for deposits, and some events may present a financial risk, e.g. if the number of attendees is not met.  Instead of direct funding, OSGeo may provide "back-stop" funding and assume the liability risk.
*OSGeo prefers code sprints that are aimed at the larger community.  That is, sprints that are multiproject and not local to a (small) geographic region are more likely to be funded.

== Motivation ==

In several (OSGeo) projects, microdonations play an important role. A system is desired to give users and sponsors an option to easily donate small amounts of money. This is of community importance, even if total contribution might be negligible, as it helps building up a mutual trust.

OSGeo should enable a way to collect microdonations for general support.

== Proposal ==
<strike>A double system is proposed where microdonations are handled by the individual projects and their respective Web sites while larger sponsorship through OSGeo (see [[Project Sponsorship]]). The use of microdonations is at the discretion of the respective PSC.
In my view, a central mechanism, where I could, say, donate 50 euros to GRASS and 50 to QGIS would be preferable to a multi-site arrangement, as it is easier for the donor and appears more trustworthy.</strike>

Workshops are 3-hour sessions in a PC classroom, and Tutorials are 90-minute sessions in a conference room.
The FOSS4G 2010 Workshop Committee is responsible for the organization of both Workshops and Tutorials.

Workshops will be hold in the Barcelona School of Computer Science ([http://www.fib.upc.edu/en.htm FIB]), at [http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=41.38854&lon=2.112316&zoom=18&layers=B000FTF Barcelona Campus Nord], buildings B5 and C6 ([http://www.fib.upc.edu/en/centre/on.html address]).

All classrooms have screen and projector for instructors.

Software installation is preferred on Windows XP native Operating System.

If linux is required, we have a vmware SUSE 11.1 image.

|| Hardware: One computer per person, plus overhead projector. Standard internet connection. Nothing out of the ordinary. Software: Already installed in the computers: PostGIS, Mapnik, Mapnik support scripts, Apache2 web server, and mod_tile. Computers *must* run Linux in order for Apache+mod_tile to work. Some other workshops may use PostGIS and Apache, so it should be coordinated. PHPPGAdmin would be a plus. Available somewhere in the workshop CDs: OpenLayers, plus some sets of geodata (global shorelines, plus a small excerpt of OpenStreetMap data). Total size of this data should be around or less than 100 MB. The workshop tutor will provide all materials prior to the workshop. All software in the computers should be tested beforehand, so it is desirable to have a disk image or install CD the tutor can try out ahead of time. Atendees should not bring anything special. All the needed software and data should be readily available in the computers, plus a CD (or pendrive, or similar device).

|| Participants will complete exercises on a PC (any OS) that is running a web server (e.g. Apache). Participants will need to edit text files with an editor and view examples in a browser. The workshop also requires GeoServer and Postgres w/ PostGIS running. We can provide software and data to be installed in advance of the workshop. In previous workshops, GeoServer has been installed and running, PostGIS configured with workshop data, and Apache configured to proxy GeoServer on port 80 and provide an alias to the workshop document root. We can provide documentation on setting all this up and can help if workshop machines are available before the workshop date. So, requirements are - * PostGIS (configured with data) * GeoServer (running on port 8080 or other) * Apache (configured to proxy GeoServer on port 80 and with alias to workshop document root) * Text editor * Web browser (Firefox recommended).

|| The workshop will run completely on the Mapbender Portal provided by OSGeo, no software will be installed during the course all that is needed is a web terminal. Attendees who want to work with their own copy of the software should either install it on a server that is available via internet during the workshop or on their own notebook. To the experienced geoportal operator the installation is straight forward, all information can be found on the Mapbender web site http://www.mapbender.org. If you want to install you own copy but are new to either GIS, web technology, mapping, OGC standards or any combination thereof it is recommended to start the installation well in advance to the workshop as it involves a web server, database, PHP, Mapbender internet accessibility. You will get all the help that you need to set up the system and get it to run properly on the http://www.mapbender.org/index.php/Mapbender_Mailing_Lists.

|| Practical Introduction to GRASS
|| For the workshop we need: - GRASS (one of the 6.4 series, 6.4.0RC5 is currently available); - the standard North Carolina GRASS demo data set, the "smaller simpler subset (47MB)" (http://grass.osgeo.org/sampledata/north_carolina/nc_basic_spm.tar.gz) is sufficient; - our HTML tutorial; - our PDF file containing the introductory slides for the workshop. The last years we used our own live DVDs, especially tailored for the Conferences (see for example the 2009 DVD here: http://www.ing.unitn.it/~grass/software/FOSS4G2009_GRASS_beginners_DVD.html), but we can provide our tutorial as a Debian and Ubuntu package, so that it can be included in the OSGEO Live DVD. Since this is a beginners' workshop, it is fundamental that GRASS' version in use matches the one used in the workshop material, so that all the details correspond. Therefore, if the OSGEO Live DVD is used we need to know which GRASS version will be included at least a month in advance, to review all the material. No special hardware is required, maps in the dataset are quite small, therefore a fairly modern Pc will do. No network connection is required, unless you want the attendees to download the tutorial and the dataset. It is possible to use attendees' laptop (some of the attendees have used their own Pc last year in Sydney), but we must be reasonably sure they have a working GRASS installation. Again, the GRASS version can be critical. Last year I have helped some of them to setup their machine via email before the workshop. The use of a live DVD on a Pc provided by the organization is probably the best choice for most of the attendees, since they are not required to setup GRASS before the workshop but they can take the DVD home and re-run the workshop. They can also use the DVD as an installer.

Workshops are 3-hour sessions in a PC classroom, and Tutorials are 90-minute sessions in a conference room.
The FOSS4G 2010 Workshop Committee is responsible for the organization of both Workshops and Tutorials.

All classrooms have screen and projector for instructors.

Software installation is preferred on Windows XP native Operating System.

If linux is required, we have a vmware SUSE 11.1 image.

|| Hardware: One computer per person, plus overhead projector. Standard internet connection. Nothing out of the ordinary. Software: Already installed in the computers: PostGIS, Mapnik, Mapnik support scripts, Apache2 web server, and mod_tile. Computers *must* run Linux in order for Apache+mod_tile to work. Some other workshops may use PostGIS and Apache, so it should be coordinated. PHPPGAdmin would be a plus. Available somewhere in the workshop CDs: OpenLayers, plus some sets of geodata (global shorelines, plus a small excerpt of OpenStreetMap data). Total size of this data should be around or less than 100 MB. The workshop tutor will provide all materials prior to the workshop. All software in the computers should be tested beforehand, so it is desirable to have a disk image or install CD the tutor can try out ahead of time. Atendees should not bring anything special. All the needed software and data should be readily available in the computers, plus a CD (or pendrive, or similar device).

|| Participants will complete exercises on a PC (any OS) that is running a web server (e.g. Apache). Participants will need to edit text files with an editor and view examples in a browser. The workshop also requires GeoServer and Postgres w/ PostGIS running. We can provide software and data to be installed in advance of the workshop. In previous workshops, GeoServer has been installed and running, PostGIS configured with workshop data, and Apache configured to proxy GeoServer on port 80 and provide an alias to the workshop document root. We can provide documentation on setting all this up and can help if workshop machines are available before the workshop date. So, requirements are - * PostGIS (configured with data) * GeoServer (running on port 8080 or other) * Apache (configured to proxy GeoServer on port 80 and with alias to workshop document root) * Text editor * Web browser (Firefox recommended).

|| The workshop will run completely on the Mapbender Portal provided by OSGeo, no software will be installed during the course all that is needed is a web terminal. Attendees who want to work with their own copy of the software should either install it on a server that is available via internet during the workshop or on their own notebook. To the experienced geoportal operator the installation is straight forward, all information can be found on the Mapbender web site http://www.mapbender.org. If you want to install you own copy but are new to either GIS, web technology, mapping, OGC standards or any combination thereof it is recommended to start the installation well in advance to the workshop as it involves a web server, database, PHP, Mapbender internet accessibility. You will get all the help that you need to set up the system and get it to run properly on the http://www.mapbender.org/index.php/Mapbender_Mailing_Lists.

|| For the workshop we need: - GRASS (one of the 6.4 series, 6.4.0RC5 is currently available); - the standard North Carolina GRASS demo data set, the "smaller simpler subset (47MB)" (http://grass.osgeo.org/sampledata/north_carolina/nc_basic_spm.tar.gz) is sufficient; - our HTML tutorial; - our PDF file containing the introductory slides for the workshop. The last years we used our own live DVDs, especially tailored for the Conferences (see for example the 2009 DVD here: http://www.ing.unitn.it/~grass/software/FOSS4G2009_GRASS_beginners_DVD.html), but we can provide our tutorial as a Debian and Ubuntu package, so that it can be included in the OSGEO Live DVD. Since this is a beginners' workshop, it is fundamental that GRASS' version in use matches the one used in the workshop material, so that all the details correspond. Therefore, if the OSGEO Live DVD is used we need to know which GRASS version will be included at least a month in advance, to review all the material. No special hardware is required, maps in the dataset are quite small, therefore a fairly modern Pc will do. No network connection is required, unless you want the attendees to download the tutorial and the dataset. It is possible to use attendees' laptop (some of the attendees have used their own Pc last year in Sydney), but we must be reasonably sure they have a working GRASS installation. Again, the GRASS version can be critical. Last year I have helped some of them to setup their machine via email before the workshop. The use of a live DVD on a Pc provided by the organization is probably the best choice for most of the attendees, since they are not required to setup GRASS before the workshop but they can take the DVD home and re-run the workshop. They can also use the DVD as an installer.

I would like to suggest the nomination of Arnulf for the OSGeo Board Election 2010 again. He did a good job the last years, so it would be nice to have him in the Board again.

He is active in the Open Source community for many years. Very early he discovered the sense of open standards and promoted the OGC and the standards.

He is active world wide - doing lots of presentations, trainings, articles, consulting and has the ability to inspire people for open source. With his company he set up lots of solutions based on open source.

He also is active in the OSGeo as president, in the OGC, in the FOSSGIS e.V. which is the german speaking local chapter of the OSGeo and in the Mapbender project.

He has a lot of energy to push things forward, to motivate and encourage people and he has a lot of ideas. He walks around with an open mind and is open when he steps up to other people.

He is dedicated for the idea of open source and puts a lot of his energy and time in this idea.

I would like to nominate Frank Warmerdam for re-election in the 2010 OSGeo Board Election.

Frank doesn't need to be introduced, he has been recognized as a leader in the Open Source Geospatial field for several years before the OSGeo Foundation was created, and has been one of the key people who made the launch and operation of the Foundation possible in its early days.

Frank has served on the OSGeo board since the creation of the Foundation and plays a key role in many (all?) of its committees. It makes no doubt that he is committed to OSGeo's mission and that he can continue to make significant contributions as an OSGeo board member.

Tim has shown strong leadership in both the OpenLayers and the GeoExt community. He has got excellent technical skills, but above all he also has excellent communication skills. Normally this is a rare combination to find.

Tim is part of both the OpenLayers as well as the GeoExt Project Steering Committee (PSC), for the OpenLayers PSC he is the chair.

Tim is working for OpenGeo, a company which has changed open source GIS for sure in the last few years, and continues to do so more and more, with adding great support packages and productizing a stack of excellent software components.

I am proud to nominate Daniel Morissette for the OSGeo Board election 2010.

Daniel is one of the early pioneers in the geospatial free and open source domain. He has been involved in the OSGeo Foundation since its inception. He is one of the main contributors of the MapServer project (for that he is often called the "Mother" of MapServer ;-) ) and he is a member of the GDAL/OGR Project Steering Committee (PSC). Due to his significant contribution to the advancement of open source ideals in the geospatial realm, he was awarded the Sol Katz Award in 2009. Daniel is also very active at a more local level. He is one of the co-founding members of the OSGeo Quebec local chapter and has recently chaired the organisation committee of the first and successful edition of the Rendez-vous OSGeo-Quebec (see http://rendez-vous-osgeo-qc.org/2010/). His addition to the board could thus be very valuable as he knows very well how local chapters work, the problems local users are facing in the adoption of geospatial open source technologies (including the cultural, linguistic and local peculiarities) and how local chapters can contribute to the achievement of the OSGeo Foundation mission.

Daniel is also one of the most patient people I know. He is always open to new ideas or points of view, but he also knows how to federate energies to carry out ambitious and difficult project. During the [http://2009.foss4g.org/ FOSS4G2009 conference] in Sydney, Australia, there will be conference rooms available for people to hold Birds-of-a-Feather sessions.

Birds-Of-A-Feather sessions are unstructured timeslots where people can self organise themselves to discuss topics of interest.

This year, Birds of a Feather sessions will be held on Thursday 22nd October.

= Introduction =
During the [http://2009.foss4g.org/ FOSS4G2009 conference] in Sydney, Australia, there will be conference rooms available for people to hold Birds-of-a-Feather sessions.

Birds-Of-A-Feather sessions are unstructured timeslots where people can self organise themselves to discuss topics of interest.

This year, Birds of a Feather sessions will be held on Thursday 22nd October.

A number of rooms are available. First ones in get the rooms.

At this stage, each room is scheduled for one hour between 1615 to 1715.

The rooms will be available for longer, however remember that the FOSS4G Harbour Cruise Dinner starts at 1900.

This will allow us to share the resources between more people.
