Community members are often interested in lending a hand with the foundation or its projects, but aren't sure where to start. This page attempts to point out efforts in need of support. It is primarily aimed at the foundation organization itself, but pointers to per-project volunteers needed pages are also welcome.

All potential volunteers are encouraged to join the [https://www.osgeo.org/content/faq/mailing_lists.html discuss@osgeo.org] mailing list.

* The [http://webcommittee.osgeo.org Web Committee] (WebCom) is always looking for active volunteers with HTML, language and design skills.
* [[WebCom]] is also in need of people able to translate web pages and documents and bridge language barriers. Read the [[OSGeo Portal Translations]] if you are interested.
* Those interested in broadening [[International Outreach]] should consider joining the Marketing committee ([[Marketing]]).
* The [[Core Curriculum Project]] needs support from those familiar with preparing academic training materials. Please see the efforts around the [[Free GIS Book]], especially the Spanish version [[Libro SIG]], which currently sees a lot of activity.
* The [[Public Geospatial Data Project]] needs help with open geodata advocacy. European activity related to the INSPIRE directive has already shown some results, but further support is also needed on a national agency level. Use the growing OSGeo network to find like-minded people and organizations.

== Software Development ==
Obviously OSGeo is a lot about software. If you are good at using one of OSGeo's software packages consider joining the corresponding user mailing list and helping people. If you want to get more involved consider joining the documentation processes or even becoming a developer yourself.

== Representing OSGeo's Projects ==
If you are good at giving presentations (entertaining people) at conferences, trade shows, exhibitions, meetings and so on, consider becoming a representative of a software projects or committee or simply talk about OSGeo's goals and mission. This can happen in any language and at any location. If you need slides, posters, flyers, info sheets or a full fledged booth please contact [[Marketing]] for further information.

[http://live.osgeo.org OSGeo Live] provides [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_CD bootable ISO-Images] and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_machine Virtual Machines] which allow users to try out fully-operational versions of popular Free Geospatial Software without the need to install a thing. Everything is set up for you ready to go: just reboot into it, glance at the help pages on the desktop, and go. The existing hard drive and operating system will not be modified in any way, everything happens in temporary system memory. As such it will run a bit slower than the "real thing" and you may want to grab a USB flash drive to save or transfer files with. You can load and boot a live-image completely from a USB stick too if you prefer.

We do this in large part by maintaining automated build scripts which collect many [[OSGeo]] programs and sample data-sets together, and then combine them to form the Live disc or VM itself. By tweaking these scripts, users are free to make their own custom distributions, for example localized in their own language and with local map data.

; Handing out DVDs or USBs
: OSGeo-Live DVDs and/or USBs are often handed out to all conference delegates, or a smaller number handed out from an OSGeo booth. DVDs are cheaper (around $2 per copy), but USBs provide a better experience as they are faster to boot up and run. You will need to:
:# Work out how to pay for the USBs/DVDs. Usually the price is factored into event budgets. This means you will require commitment from the event Organisors. However you may find an external sponsor, or for smaller print runs, you might find volunteers to print from their computers.
:# Source a local printer, preferably local. Printers typically require 2 weeks to do the print run, although they often will turn around faster if you pay more money.
:# Printing DVDs: The printer will require an [http://live.osgeo.org/en/download.html ISO image], and artwork for the DVD face and DVD sleeve. You may make use of existing [https://svn.osgeo.org/osgeo/livedvd/artwork/sleeve/ artwork] or create your own.
:# Printing USBs: A 4 Gig USB is required for [http://live.osgeo.org/en/download.html osgeo-live-mini] (8 Gig if you wish the full image with windows and mac installers). There are multiple use cases for this product:

* '''Demo DVD''' that can be handed out at conferences. This will contain a wide variety of applications, preconfigured with some sample data and containing introductory tutorials. It should be able to function completely offline, at least within the scope of the tutorials, and should provide an introduction to many products. This is very much a Live DVD, and as such should be conservative with regards to size (it will be run from RAM).
* '''Education DVD''' This seems to be a more involved version than the Demo DVD, including more involved material, including train-the-trainer style material. This is targeted at those who will be teaching others, be it in workshops or university classes/labs. My expectation (mleslie: feel free to correct me) is that this is more likely to be installed on machines and used as a teaching resource, as opposed to a toy to play with, as with the Demo DVD. This will require material developed through the [[Category:Education|Education initiative]].
* '''Workstation Install DVD''' This need was seen in Cape Town, where the bandwidth seems to be a very limiting factor. Using the DVD to install either a complete OS, a set of packages to an existing Linux, or Windows installers completely offline is of great value in the developing world. Would it be of greater value to lose the Edu or demo material and put in complete application documentation?

[http://live.osgeo.org OSGeo Live] provides [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_CD bootable ISO-Images] and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_machine Virtual Machines] which allow users to try out fully-operational versions of popular Free Geospatial Software without the need to install a thing. Everything is set up for you ready to go: just reboot into it, glance at the help pages on the desktop, and go. The existing hard drive and operating system will not be modified in any way, everything happens in temporary system memory. As such it will run a bit slower than the "real thing" and you may want to grab a USB flash drive to save or transfer files with. You can load and boot a live-image completely from a USB stick too if you prefer.

We do this in large part by maintaining automated build scripts which collect many [[OSGeo]] programs and sample data-sets together, and then combine them to form the Live disc or VM itself. By tweaking these scripts, users are free to make their own custom distributions, for example localized in their own language and with local map data.

[http://live.osgeo.org OSGeo Live] provides [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_CD bootable ISO-Images] and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_machine Virtual Machines] which allow users to try out fully-operational versions of popular Free Geospatial Software without the need to install a thing. Everything is set up for you ready to go: just reboot into it, glance at the help pages on the desktop, and go. The existing hard drive and operating system will not be modified in any way, everything happens in temporary system memory. As such it will run a bit slower than the "real thing" and you may want to grab a USB flash drive to save or transfer files with. You can load and boot a live-image completely from a USB stick too if you prefer.

We do this in large part by maintaining automated build scripts which collect many [[OSGeo]] programs and sample data-sets together, and then combine them to form the Live disc or VM itself. By tweaking these scripts, users are free to make their own custom distributions, for example localized in their own language and with local map data.

Everything is set up for you ready to go: just reboot into it, glance at the help pages on the desktop, and go. As such it will run a bit slower than the "real thing" and you may want to grab a USB flash drive to save or transfer files with. You can load and boot a live-image completely from a USB stick too if you prefer.

We do this in large part by maintaining automated build scripts which collect many [[OSGeo]] programs and sample data-sets together, and then combine them to form the Live disc or VM itself. By tweaking these scripts, users are free to make their own custom distributions, for example localized in their own language and with local map data.

[http://live.osgeo.org OSGeo Live] provides [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_CD bootable ISO-Images] and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_machine Virtual Machines] which allow users to try out fully-operational versions of popular Free Geospatial Software without the need to install a thing. Everything is set up for you ready to go: just reboot into it, glance at the help pages on the desktop, and go. The existing hard drive and operating system will not be modified in any way, everything happens in temporary system memory. As such it will run a bit slower than the "real thing" and you may want to grab a USB flash drive to save or transfer files with. You can load and boot a live-image completely from a USB stick too if you prefer.

We do this in large part by maintaining automated build scripts which collect many [[OSGeo]] programs and sample data-sets together, and then combine them to form the Live disc or VM itself. By tweaking these scripts, users are free to make their own custom distributions, for example localized in their own language and with local map data.

Geographical Information Systems were seen as very special and very complex domain in India. There is a lot of hype attached with it and with that obviously high cost. So far such systems were seen as something to be used for high level planning and complex scientific operations by large corporates and Govt research agencies or departments only. Also the older mapping policy of India prevented virtually anybody except governments to possess any map data.
Some people are interested in mapdata as such licenced softwares remain unutilized in various government offices because they require either extensive training or easy availability on multiple locations. All this can be changed by the use of Free/Opensource software tools. There is hardly any proprietary GIS software that can show text in Unicode standard in maps. This is significant since all government data and most educational institutions work in local language media. FOSS GIS has already shown this solution. Thus, Free/Opensource Geospatial softwares which are much more powerful and usable can be used for developing systems where more and more public participation is sought.

The India OSGeo Chapter is formed to fulfill the mission and objectives described in this document. India OSGeo Chapter will earnestly follow the Local Chapter Guidelines stipulated by OSGeo and cooperate closely with OSGeo Board in promoting the use and development of OSGeo projects in India. The India OSGeo Chapter will strive to serve anyone interested in Open Source Geospatial Solutions and related issues, and to cover all the activities associated with the application, development and promotion of Open Source Geospatial solutions in India.
