Introduction

Applied Geoinformatics for Society and Environment (AGSE) is an interdisciplinary, international forum for sharing knowledge about the application of Geoinformatics with focus on application and on developing countries, mainly organized by The Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences.

Since the inaugural event in 2008, every year a summer school / conference took place in several parts of the world (India, Germany, Peru, Kenya, Malaysia). One focus is since the beginning is the usage of Open Spurce software, providing presentations and workshops, encouraging the connection with and to local initiatives and communities.

The number of presentations and exhibiting service providers focusing on or referencing Free and Open Source Software projects has again considerably increased. In 2011 we had our first FOSS Special Interest Group meeting. In 2012 it is planned to have a common conference AGSE and FOSS South-East Asia in collaboration with the OSGeo Foundation.
