MapServer 5.6.0 Released 22 Déc 2009

L'équipe de MapServer est heureuse d'annoncer la sortie de la version 5.6.0. Cette nouvelle version contient quelques nouvelles fonctionnalités et des améliorations de performance. Petit résumé.

Nouvelles fonctionnalités de la 5.6 :

• MS RFC 51 : Schema XML de mapfile et XSLT (voir http://trac.osgeo.org/mapserver/wiki/XMLMapfiles )
• MS RFC 52 : Traitement de requête en une seule passe, donnant des requêtes WFS avec un moteur de base de données beaucoup beaucoup plus rapides
• MS RFC 55 : Amélioration du controle de la résolution de sortie, permettant d'imprimer des cartes à la résolution de l'imprimante en utilisant un mapfile défini pour une résolution écran
• MS RFC 57 : Amélioration des étiquettes : possibilité de répéter des étiquettes le long d'une ligne/multiligne.

D'autres améliorations notables :

• Corrections de sécurité (portées également sur la version 5.4) :

 * Amélioration de la sécurité relative aux mapfiles et aux répertoires de non-confiance
 * Correction de plusieurs problèmes de sécurité trouvés lors de l'audit de la partie CGI (#2939, #2941, #2942, #2943, #2944)

• Amélioration de performance

 * Chargement de toutes les bandes d'image GDAL en une passe pour un traitement plus rapide (r9260)
 * Optimisation de l'accès aux très grands shapefiles (#2930)

• Plusieurs améliorations/corrections au support des spécifications de webservices OGC
• Plusieurs améliorations/corrections de MapScript

Pour finir, à propose de la documentation, l'équipe de documentation de MapServer continue de mettre à jour et de maintenir les documents, et le site mapserver.org devrait être mis à jour avec la documentation de la 5.6 sous peu. L'équipe a travaillé notamment sur une structure pour des documents multilingues. La structure est maintenant en place sur la version de développement du site, mais des volontaires sont nécessaires pour traduire les pages dans leur propre langue. L'équipe de documentation demande aux volontaires intéréssés par la traduction de la documentation d'envoyer un message sur la liste de diffusion mapserver-dev.

Academic track at FOSS4G 2009, two weeks till abstracts due, workshops announced

The Academic community and FOSS4G organising committee are pleased to add an academic track to the FOSS4G conference, and remind interested presenters that there are only two weeks left for FOSS4G abstract submissions! The Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial conference (FOSS4G), is being held in Sydney, Australia October 20-23. http://2009.foss4g.org

The academic track will act as an inventory of current research topics and promote cooperative research between OSGeo developers and the academia. The academic track is the right forum to highlight the most important research challenges and trends in the domain, and let them became the basis for an informal OSGeo research agenda. It will foster interdisciplinary discussions in all aspects of the geospatial and free and open source domains. It aims to promote networking between participants, initiate and favour discussions regarding cutting-edge technologies in the field, exchange research ideas and promote international collaboration.

All submissions to the academic track must be original unpublished work written in English that is currently not under review elsewhere. The submitted papers will be thoroughly reviewed by two to three members of the international scientific committee and refereed for their quality, originality and relevance. L'OSGeo accueil 20 étudiants pour le Google Summer of Code

OSGeo has selected twenty students to participate in development efforts spread across 11 OSGeo projects as part of the Google Summer of Code for 2009. Google is providing funding for the selected students, while the project communities are providing mentors to assist the students. Binary distributions will follow shortly as will a new demo. Nearly 100 tickets were closed as part of this effort. Major feature additions include:

   * MS RFC 30: Support for WMS 1.3.0
   * MS RFC 40: Label text alignment and wrapping
   * MS RFC 44: Restore URL modification of mapfiles to pre-5.0 levels
   * MS RFC 47: Move IGNORE_MISSING_DATA to run-time configuration
   * MS RFC 48: GEOTRANSFORM Geometry operations
   * MS RFC 49: Symbology, Labeling, and Cartography Improvements

Sydney, Australia. 20 January 2009. The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) and the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) have announced a Climate Change Integration Plugfest (CCIP) to be launched at the FOSS4G conference, 20-23 October 2009.

The CCIP will demonstrate standards based interoperability between geospatial applications based on a Climate Change scenario.

Raj Singh, Director of Interoperability Programs at OGC, explained that, "The CCIP is a server with multiple virtual machines providing a number of different geospatial Web services that implement the OGC's open interface and encoding standards. It will be used in the coming months to demonstrate open Web-based geoprocessing at conferences, testbeds, classes and other events around the world."

Graham de Hoedt, Manager of Climate Information Services at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology said, "Integration of data and applications is crucial for solving complex problems like the provision/sharing of decadal and multi-decadal climate change related data and information".

Cameron Shorter, Chair of the FOSS4G organizing committee and Systems Architect at LISAsoft said "Geospatial users regularly ask how to integrate Open Source, COTS and proprietary software. At FOSS4G, attendees will see the major geospatial applications working together and talk with implementers about what really works".

Wayland, Mass., January 7, 2009 - In Valencia, Spain, at the December Technical Committee meetings of the Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. (OGC), the OGC and the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to coordinate in advancing open geospatial standards (OGC's mission) and open source geospatial software and data (OSGeo's mission).

Mark Reichardt, CEO and President of the OGC, explained that, "Openness benefits markets. Vendors of proprietary software have found that today's more open and complex "business ecosystem," which includes both open source software and open standards, is good for their businesses. It's also good for technology users. It makes sense for the OGC to work with the OSGeo."

Open source software is software that has been designed and developed in an open, community process. The OGC's open standards are similarly developed in an open, community process, but they are specifications (for interfaces, encodings and best practices), not software.

Arnulf Christl, President of OSGeo, said, "We look forward to collaborating with the OGC to identify open source technologies that can be used as reference implementations for OGC standards and to identify standards requirements that result from our open source geospatial software development programs."

The MOU provides for the assignment of up to six one-year Individual Memberships in the OGC. Memberships will be selected by OSGeo and are subject to OGC qualifications for Individual Membership.

The OSGeo is a not-for-profit organization founded in 2006 whose mission is to support and promote the collaborative development of open source geospatial technologies and data.

Mark Reichardt, CEO et Président de l'OGC, explique que, "l'ouverture bénéficie aux marchés. Les éditeurs de solutions propriétaires ont trouvé que "les écosystèmes d'affaires" plus ouverts et plus complexes d'aujourd'hui, ce qui inclut à la fois les logiciels open source et les standards ouverts, sont bon pour leurs affaires. Cela est également bon pour les utilisateurs de technologies. Cela a un sens pour l'OGC de travailler avec l'OSGeo."

Les logiciels libres sont des logiciels qui ont été conçus et développés dans un esprit d'ouverture, de procédure communautaire. Les normes ouvertes de l'OGC sont également développées dans un esprit d'ouverture, de procédure communautaire, et il y a des spécifications (pour les interfaces, les formats et les bonnes pratiques), mais pas de logiciel.

L'accord d'entente prévoit l'adhésion de membres individuels d'un maximum de six ans à l'OGC. Les adhésions seront sélectionnés par l'OSGeo et seront soumis à acceptation de l'OGC pour les adhésions individuelles.

The OSGeo board has formally approved three new local chapters. OSGeo local chapters provide a venue to support local users and developers, as well as a mechanism to further OSGeo's mission and goals in a linguistic, or geographic area.

FOSSGIS e.V. has been approved as a local chapter for the german speaking countries of Germany, Austria and Switzerland with Dr. Georg Lösel as representative. FOSSGIS e.V. has existed since the year 2000 at which time is was incorporated as GRASS-Anwender-Vereinigung (GAV). It was recently renamed FOSSGIS e.V. FOSSGIS e.V is responsible for maintaining the FreeGIS Portal. Since 2006 it has held the FOSSGIS conference promoting FOSS4G software, with 500 participants in 2008. FOSSGIS e.V. also plays an important role in supporting a FOSS4G role in other tradeshows such as InterGeo and AGIT.

The OSGeo Spanish Local Chapter has been approved for spanish speaking areas of all continents with Pedro-Juan Ferrer Matoses as representative. Since it's formation in 2007 the chapter has established a members list, and elected a board of directors. Key activities include work on the Free GIS Book, Spanish Localization] and events including Jornadas de SIG Libre and the Jornadas gvSIG.

The Comité de direction du Chapitre québécois de l'OSGeo has been approved for the region of Québec (Canada) with Daniel Morissette as representative. This chapter seeks to provide a channel for communication, exchange and cooperation to facilitate the development of the Québec community around OSGeo products and Open Source Geospatial topics in general. With a primary focus on local community development, it also plans to cooperate with the Francophone Chapter on French translations, and with other nearby chapters on some events. The chapter has approximately 90 members, and has formed a steering committee.

Nouvelles Représentations Locales allemande, espagnole et québécoise acceptées

Le Bureau de l'OSGeo a officiellement approuvé trois nouvelles Représentations locales. Les représentations locales de l'OSGeo sont un moyen d'animer la communauté locale des utilisateurs et développeurs, ainsi qu'un mécanisme pour se focaliser sur une zone géographique ou linguistique au niveau des missions et buts de l'OSGeo.

FOSSGIS e.V. a été approuvé comme une représentation locale pour les pays germanophones (Allemagne, Autriche et Suisse) avec le Dr. Georg Lösel comme représentant. FOSSGIS e.V. existe depuis 2000 au moment où il a été accepté comme GRASS-Anwender-Vereinigung (GAV). Il a été récemment renommé FOSSGIS e.V.. 03/10/2008 - Paul Ramsey Receives Sol Katz GFOSS Award - Paul Ramsey reçoit le Sol Katz GFOSS Award 2008

During the closing plenary of the FOSS4G 2008 conference, Paul Ramsey was honored with the Sol Katz Award for Geospatial Free and Open Source Software (GFOSS) for 2008. Paul has played a leadership role in the PostGIS, GEOS and uDig projects. He has also played an important advocacy role for Open Source in the geospatial field with the government and business communities. The PostGIS project (a spatial extension to PostgreSQL) is the leading open source spatial database solution and has contributed greatly to the understanding that FOSS4G is "enterprise ready". Paul also lead the very successful FOSS4G 2007 conference in Victoria, and is now a director of OSGeo. Paul's video acceptance is available at:

Background

The Sol Katz Award for Geospatial Free and Open Source Software is awarded annually by OSGeo to individuals who have demonstrated leadership in the GFOSS community. Recipients of the award will have contributed significantly through their activities to advance open source ideals in the geospatial realm. The hope is that the award will both acknowledge the work of community members, and pay tribute to one of its founders, for years to come.

Sol Katz was an early pioneer of GFOSS and left behind a large body of work in the form of applications, format specifications, and utilities. In the early 80's, Sol assisted in the development of a public domain GIS package called MOSS (Map Overlay and Statistical System). This software was arguably the first open source GIS software in the world. Sol would later go on to release and maintain PC MOSS. He was also one of the first involved in public data translator utilities. Utilities that he developed for converting DEMs and reading SDTS files were contributed back to the geospatial community, and are still available today. Sol was also a frequent contributor to many geospatial list servers, providing much guidance to the geospatial community at large. Sol Katz's collection of GIS utilities at the BLM is still available at ftp://ftp.blm.gov/pub/gis/. Sadly, after fighting Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma for almost a decade, Sol died April 23, 1999 in bed. His legacy will always live on in the GFOSS world.

Paul Ramsey reçoit le Sol Katz GFOSS Award 2008

Contexte

Le Prix Sol Katz pour les Logiciels Libres et Open Source en Geospatial est décerné chaque année par l'OSGeo à des personnes qui ont fait preuve de leadership dans la communauté GFOSS. Les récipiendaires de ce prix ont contribué de manière significative par le biais de leurs activités visant à promouvoir les idéaux open source dans le domaine géospatial. L'espoir est que le prix reconnaisse à la fois le travail des membres de la communauté, et rende hommage à l'un de ses fondateurs, pour les années à venir.

Sol Katz a été l'un des pionniers des GFOSS et a laissé derrière lui un grand nombres de choses sous la forme d'applications, de format des spécifications, et d'utilitaires. Au début des années 80, Sol a aidé à l'élaboration d'un paquetage public SIG appelé MOSS (Système géographique et statistique). Ce logiciel a été sans doute le premier logiciel open source de SIG dans le monde. Sol allait passer à la libération et au maintien de PC MOSS. Il a également été l'un des premiers impliqués dans les commandes de traduction de données publiques. Les utilitaires qu'il a développés pour la conversion de MNT et de la lecture des fichiers SDTS ont aidé la communauté géospatiale, et sont encore disponibles aujourd'hui. Sol était également un contributeur fréquent à de nombreuses listes géospatiales, en fournissant beaucoup d'aide à la communauté géospatiale au sens large. La collection d'utilitaire SIG de Sol Katz à la BLM est encore disponible à ftp://ftp.blm.gov/pub/gis/. Malheureusement, après sa lutte contre la maladie du Lymphone de non-Hodgkinpendant pendant près d'une décennie, Sol est mort le 23 avril 1999 dans son lit. Son héritage sera toujours vivant dans le monde des GFOSS.

La Fondation Open Source Geospatial (OSGeo) a récemment accueilli deux nouveaux directeurs au sein de son Bureau et élu ses directeurs (officer), dont un nouveau président.

Un nouveau président :

Le Bureau des directeurs de l'OSGeo a élu Arnulf Christl comme nouveau président. M. Christl apporte son expérience de plusieurs années dans l'industrie géospatiale, dont une forte perspective sur l'utilisation de logiciels libres et Open Source dans un contexte commercial à travers sa société WhereGroup à Bonn, Allemagne. Il a travaillé au sein du Bureau depuis sa création et a été impliqué dans plusieurs projets, du marketing à la gestion du site Web, en passant par la gestion du projet de cartographie sur Internet Mapbender. Il est déterminé à voir l'OSGeo poursuivre ses efforts de communication afin d'aider les organisations à continuer à adopter des solutions libres et Open Source dans tous les domaines.

Il explique : "Je suis heureux de pouvoir aider dans mon nouveau rôle de président de l'OSGeo. J'ai trois buts principaux sur ma feuille de route. Tout d'abord, une aide supplémentaire pour l'émergence de nouvelles représentations nationales, en les encourageant à développer des rencontres/conférences qui complètent nos efforts d'un FOSS4G global. Ensuite, améliorer notre aide pour les sociétés utilisant et s'impliquant dans le logiciel Geospatial Open Source. Notre organisation est maintenant assez forte et en bonne santé pour que nous l'annoncions au monde dans la presse et dans les conférences. Enfin, mon objectif le plus ambitieux est celui de combler l'écart entre les sociétés propriétaires et le bénévolat localisé. Si cela est possible, alors l'OSGeo est l'organisation capable de combler cet écart."

Un nouveau trésorier :

Après deux années de bons et loyaux services, Frank Warmerdam a préféré quitter sa fonction de Président pour se concentrer sur d'autres aspects de l'organisation et laisser ainsi la place à des idées neuves et une vision nouvelle dans le rôle du leader. Il a été choisi comme nouveau trésorier de l'OSGeo, prenant la suite de Dave McIlhagga qui tenait ce rôle précédemment.

M. Warmerdam décrit ce changement : "J'ai vraiment apprécié cette fonction de Président et suis heureux des progrès réalisés. L'enthousiasme d'Arnulf et son expérience en font un président idéal. J'ai souhaité apporter mon aide du côté de la gestion financière de l'organisation, c'est donc une bonne chose de pouvoir le faire dans le rôle officiel de Trésorier."

En tant que leader du projet GDAL/OGR, M. Warmerdam a été intimement lié aux finances de l'OSGeo, recueillant ainsi 30 000 $(USD) pour le parrainage de ce projet. Il contribuera à rationaliser les processus financiers et à superviser les rapports financiers, tout en collaborant avec le comité des finances.

Un nouveau Bureau :

En juillet 2008, on a procédé à l'élection de 4 des 9 directeurs du Bureau. Les résultats ont vu deux nouveaux administrateurs rejoindre le Bureau et deux autres ré-élus à des postes précédemment expirés. Le nouveau Bureau est composé de :
