CLSA 2014 Conference OSGeo Open Source GIS Track

Introduction

There is an opportunity to host an open source GIS event at the Annual California Land Surveyors Conference. The conference is typically held at the end of March or April in Reno, Nevada.

The CLSA Committee that organizes the conference has asked for a preliminary event schedule before making a final decision on placing the open source GIS event into the conference program. Details on that preliminary event schedule are on this wiki page.

A half day event would need 3 hours of talks/workshops. A full day event would need 6 hours. The preliminary event schedule below is organized into three main sessions: GIS Concepts, GIS Software, and GIS Programming. It is set up for two tracks, but could be shrunk to a single track.

Speaker Biographies

Ragi Burhum

Ragi Burhum is software developer living and working in Downtown San Francisco. Ragi worked previously on the programming for ESRI’s desktop GIS software and now manages AmigoCloud, a new start-up that offers services related for GIS on mobile devices. Ragi is an active member of the California OSGeo Chapter, a charter member of OSGeo, and speaks about GIS and location based technology at events around California.

Jeff Hobbs

Jeff Hobbs manages the GIS and internet sites for San Jose Water Company. He has 14 years’ experience in the GIS industry. Before San Jose Water Company, Jeff worked for Intergraph and the City of San Jose. He has a BA in Geography from San Jose State University with a concentration in Technical Geography.

Peter Baumann

Baumann is professor of Computer Science at Jacobs University, Bremen, Germany and founder and CEO of rasdaman GmbH.

He is inventor and Princial Architect of the rasdaman Array DBMS, the historically first complete implementation of what today is called a "Big Data Analytics" server for large, multi-dimensional arrays. He has authored and co-authored 100+ book chapters and papers on array (aka raster) databases and further fields, and has given tutorials on raster databases worldwide.

Landon Blake

Landon Blake is a licensed land surveyor living and working in California's Central Valley. He has been involved in GIS for over 10 years. He serves as a Charter Member of the OSGeo, the editor of the OSGeo Journal, and the Board Representative for the California Chapter of the OSGeo. He also works as a volunteer programmer on OpenJUMP, an open source desktop GIS program.

  • Day 1 - 1:30PM to 3:00PM = Dealing With Temporal Aspects of Large Raster Data Sets (Peter Baumann)
  • Day 1 - 3:30PM to 5:00PM = GIS Database Concepts With Post GIS (Jeff Hobbs)

Day 2 - Track 2

  • Day 2 - 8:30AM to 10:00AM = Mobile Data Collection with Open Data Kit (Landon Blake)
  • Day 2 - 10:30AM to 12:00PM = The Role of Open Standards in Processing Large Raster Data Sets (Peter Baumann)
