A do-ocracy (also sometimes do-opoly, which is a more obvious pun on “duopoly”) is an organizational structure in which individuals choose roles and tasks for themselves and execute them. Responsibilities attach to people who do the work, rather than elected or selected officials.

The OSGeo Way of Doing Things

OSGeo has adopted a do-ocratic way of getting things done. The OSGeo Do-ocracy is implemented following some simple rules:

  • If you want to do anything, first make sure the respective community knows about it.
  • If in doubt, ask on the OSGeo Discuss mailing list, someone there will know.
  • Wait for an appropriate moment (depending on what you want to do this can be one day up to two weeks).
  • If there are no complaints, forge ahead.
  • If there are complaints, kindly address them, get into a dialog, be inclusive.
  • If your plan creates an unsolvable deadlock, push it up to the next level of the OSGeo hierarchy ideally a committee. If that does not work ask the Board of Directors. The ultimate arbitrator is the OSGeo President.

Do-ocratic Principles of this Wiki and Formal Approval

This Wiki is largely created, edited and maintained by applying a do-ocratic principle. This process is backed up and formalized by the need to approve all official statements, rules and documents of the organization by the Board of Directors.

Most pages with official content are copied to the official OSGeo web site at http://www.osgeo.org after approval by the board. If you are unsure about the legal status of any information watch out for the header of the corresponding page of this Wiki and find out whether it is a working page or contains official content. Officially approved pages in this Wiki may additionally be write-protected. Contact a Wiki Sysop if it needs to be changed.
