Call for research papers

Background

The success of open source software like Linux or Apache, GRASS or MapServer, make us proud of the open source model. But for the dozens of successful projects, there are hundreds of others that never became useful as expected. We are still trying to understand this complex phenomena called open source, that requires a interdisciplinary understanding of its dynamics.

Definitely, the success of some open source geospatial software is related with the serious efforts on the foundations of it. (...)

Objectives

FOSS4G 2009 academic track aims aims at bringing together researchers, developers, users and practitioners carrying out research and development in the geospatial and the free and open source fields and willing to share original and recent research developments and experiences.

The academic track will act as an inventory of current research topics, but the major goal is to promote cooperative research between OSGeo developers and the academia. The academic track is the right forum to highlight the most important research challenges and trends in the domain, and let them became the basis for an informal OSGeo research agenda. It will foster interdisciplinary discussions in all aspects of the geospatial and free and open source domains. It will be organized in a way to promote networking between the participants, to initiate and favour discussions regarding cutting-edge technologies in the field, to exchange research ideas and to promote international collaboration.

Topics of interest

We invite submissions that address theoretical, technical, and practical topics of related to geospatial free and open source domain. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to the following:

Important dates

Refereeing

Submission selection process is based on full paper peer review, with at least 3 reviewers per paper.

Submission guidelines

Papers should be written in English, with the 6000 words maximum. Please consider the Springer formatting guidelines.

On the 1st of June, OpenOffice, Word and LaTeX templates will be available to authors.

Publication

The Scientific committee started as many contacts as possible to find a reputed editor willing to publish the FOSS4G research papers. Soon as we get and agreement, we will announce the selected publication.
