The education committee was formed to inventory, organize and coordinate the development of educational and curriculum material that supports open source geospatial-related education. Intended to work collaboratively providing Appropriately Licensed Material accessible to a broad audience including academia, professionals, and the general public.

The education committee began around 2006 and evolved into the broader GeoForAll initiative.

GeoForAll formally took over the responsibilities of the the education committee in 2016, opperating as an OSGeo committee with a healthy, diverse representation of initiative participants.
