Jeroen Ticheler studied Tropical Forestry at the [http://www.wur.nl/UK/ Agriculture University of Wageningen] with specialization in GIS and Remote Sensing. Upon graduation in 1997 he worked on Participatory Soil Fertility Management in Africa at the [http://www.kit.nl/ Royal Institute for the Tropics] of The Netherlands until he joined the [http://www.fao.org Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO)] in 1999 in support of the [http://metart.fao.org ARTEMIS] system. He initiated the [http://geonetwork.sourceforge.net GeoNetwork opensource] project in 2000 as the foundation for the [http://www.fao.org/geonetwork FAO GeoNetwork] and has been promoting the use of international standards and free and open source software for geographic data and information ever since. Other initiatives started are the [http://lists.eogeo.org/mailman/listinfo/opensdi OpenSDI] and the [http://www.ungiwg.org/unsdi.htm UNSDI]
