The Charter Member nomination (part of the Election 2017) will be open from 2017-08-21 to 2017-09-07. The list of nominees for the 2017 Charter Member Election is maintained by the Chief Returning Officer (cro at osgeo.org). This page is write protected and can only be edited by SysOps.


To submit a charter member nomination:

  • Please confirm with the nominated person first!
  • Please email cro@osgeo.org with their name, country, contact email and paragraph describing why you are recommending this person as a Charter Member
  • Also, you might want to reference their OSGeo Advocate profile.

Note for admins: simple script to scrape this page to generate meaningful lines for the electronic voting system

I would like to nominate Arne Schubert for OSGeo charter membership. Arne is active in the Mapbender Project & in the YAGA Development Team. He was involved in FOSSGIS events and organized the OSGeo & OSM Subconference at FrOSCon last week. He is a great value for OSGeo, FOSSGIS and FOSS4G. He may get involved in GSoC next year and get involved in OGC Specs. And one thing I do not want to keep secret is that he talks about Docker every day :).

2 Tom Chadwin UK From: Jo Cook

I would like to nominate Tom Chadwin as a charter member of OSGeo. Tom is the author of QGIS2Web (https://github.com/tomchadwin/qgis2web), which is any incredibly valuable tool, key in enabling a lot of new people to get involved with open source web mapping. Tom is also an extremely valuable member of the OSGeo community in the UK, successfully promoting open source geospatial use in his National Park Authority and beyond.

3 Torben Barsballe Canada From: Jody Garnett

Torben Barsballe is an amazing addition to the Java Tribe, in just a few short years Torben is one of the top committers[1] on the GeoServer project! Torben a dedicated and professional member of our community reviewing pull-requests, participating in code sprints, and taking lead on the occasional monthly release. His dedication shows - even going so far as to attending the bi-weekly PSC meetings (despite not having a vote.). Torben is an advocate for open source, speaking at local Victoria GeoGeek events, regional foss4g-na events, and two global foss4g evetns. Torben is a kind instructor offering workshops at the local University of Victoria, and at the gloabl foss4g events. For foss4g 2017 he painstakingly reviewed the osgeo brochure, manning the OSGeo booth answering questions, and helping new contributors during the code sprint. It is a pleasure to honour such a wonderful member of our community with this nomination.

It is a great honor for me to nominate Jorge Samuel Mendes de Jesus. Jorge is active and recognized for his work for years in the world of FOSS4G. He is currently working at Geocat and is involved in various Open Source ProjectS, amongst them the famous GeoNetwork and PyWPS. Jorge is someone with a clear vision and positive thinking. Jorge attends the FOSS4G on a regular manner and often make presentation and workshop there. I have faith in Jorge and feel that he is someone representative and that will be of big benefit for OSGeo.

5 Rémi Cresson France From: Gerald Fenoy

I would like to nominate Rémi Cresson for OSGeo Charter Membership. Rémi works at IRSTEA (french National Research Institute of Science and Technology for Environment and Agriculture) and is involved in various Open Source projects and provide his inputs on many mailing lists. He is an active member of the OrfeoToolBox PSC and accessorily, he has a ZOO-Project developper account. In his activities, he has proven many his value as a developper or to provide his vision on how to handle an Open Source project properly. He has attended many time the OTB Hack Fest over the year and also FOSS4G. He is actively promoting use of Open Source in his research center and abroad. I am sure that Rémi will be a great addition to our Charter Member list.

8 Micah Wengren USA From: Tom Kralidis

I would like to nominate Micah Wengren [1] for OSGeo Charter Membership. Micah is with the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and has been a proponent of open source at NOAA (GeoNode, GeoServer) since 2007. He has been a core committer to the GeoNode project since 2014. More recently, he has been active in the open data community, deploying, developing, and supporting open source software for data discovery within NOAA and in supporting other US Federal agencies through implementation of the Federal GeoCloud interagency pilot project from 2012 to 2015. Currently he contributes to the open source software ecosystem of the US Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) [2] to publish ocean observations and forecast products for US coastal waters. Micah would be an asset to OSGeo charter membership given his background and interest in FOSS4G.

It is my pleasure to nominate Dr. Rafael Moreno-Sanchez, from USA, as an OSGeo Charter Member. Rafael is working at the Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences at the University of Colorado Denver, USA [1]. Rafael is also very active contributor in the OSGeo’s GeoForAll initiative . Rafael Moreno led the effort to establish the FOSS4G lab which opened in 2014 in the Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences at the University of Colorado , USA to fulfill a growing demand for education, research and service in Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial applications (FOSS4G) development and applications by citizens, businesses, governments, educators, students, researchers and geospatial working professionals in the Front Range of Colorado and beyond at University of Colorado Denver and constantly assisting educators and students. Rafael also initiated and leads the GeoForAll's "Open Geospatial Science & Applications" webinar series [2]. These webinars (and recordings) are viewed by hundreds of people around the world and helped us to spread the ideas and philosophy of Openness in GeoEducation and Research. 10 Patrick Hogan USA From: Suchith Anand

It is my pleasure to nominate Patrick Hogan (USA) as an OSGeo Charter Member. Patrick Hogan [1] works for NASA, USA. Patrick is also very active contributor in the OSGeo’s Geo For All initiative . He along with Chris Pettit leads the OpenCitySmart thematic [2] of GeoForAll . This initiative helped us bring together key colleagues and students from around the world to work on innovative ideas and solutions specific to urban management for the benefit of all. We are especially grateful for Patrick’s efforts (in coordination with Maria Brovelli) in creating the NASA Europa Challenge initiative [3] which adds great momentum to our efforts to promote openness in education and research worldwide. 11 Mark Iliffe UK From: Maria Antonia Brovelli

I want to nominate Mark Iliffe as charter member of OSGeo. Mark has a lot of experience both as researcher and as a consultant of important organizations, like World Bank. His main activities have been in coordinating mapping in developing countries examining the emergent phenomenon of community mapping and volunteered. Das Ramani Huria, one of the project which has been seeing him involved as a main actor, is considered as a best practice for developing (and probably could also be for developed) countries. He is also invited delegate to the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN GGIM) as an expert on Volunteered Geographic Information and geography in emerging countries. He organised the 2013 FOSS4G Conference as a member of the local organising committee and is one of the two chairs of FOSS4G 2018 in Dar Es Salaam. OSGEO will greatly benefit of the presence of Mark in our community.

15 Msilikale Msilanga Tanzania From: Maria Antonia Brovelli

I'm honored of nominating Msilikale Msilanga as OSGeo Charter Member. He is consulting the World Bank on Transportation and ICT by collecting in Tanzania geospatial information on transportation, education, and public facilities and by training the government on Open Data. He has a huge experience in community based projects (using FOSS) for flooding resilience in informal settlements. He has been working with the local community since 2011 helping them to understand how to use the mapping equipment for collaborative projects. After the experience in Tanzania, he also helped the creation of the first community mapping in Mozambique. Moreover, Msilikale is one of the two chairs of FOSS4G 2018 in Dar Er Salaam. I believe that his experience on collaborative mapping is fundamental for our OSGeo Community.

16 Guido Stein USA From: Sara Safavi, Michael Smith

I would like to nominate Guido Stein for OSGeo Charter Membership. Many met Guido for the first time at FOSS4G in Boston, where he co-chaired this record-breaking conference. However Guido has been a force of nature in the geospatial community for over a decade, and those of us who know him were not surprised to see his leadership help FOSS4G 2017 achieve such great success. Guido is a passionate leader & speaker, and a tremendous asset to our community.

I would like to nominate Guido Stein for OSGeo Charter membership. As most people should know, Guido was co-chair of the Boston LOC for 2017. And, as was expected, he did an amazing job. The conference was a complete success and Guido's touches were everywhere, with the detail and effort that he puts into things. He is currently working efforts to establish a US local chapter of OSGeo. He is a valuable member of the community and he should be recognized as a charter member.

I would like to nominate Tõnis Kärdi from Estonia for OSGeo charter membership. Tönis was present at FOSS4G 2016 and FOSS4G Europe 2017 and it was great to discuss with him. He gave talks on FOSS4G Europe and was involved in the code sprint. And he has now the chance to create an Estonian OSGeo Local Chapter and build up a great local community. Tõnis has been active in the geo field for approximately 15 years but is a relative newcomer to the world of osgeo and works with open data and open source GIS solutions at his work at Estonian Ministry of Environment IT Center (KEMIT).

It is pleasure for me to nominate Manuel Grizonet [1] for OSGeo Charter Membership. Many people know very well Manuel for the huge activities he is leading for years in OSGeo. Manuel is involved in the development team and is PSC member of the OrfeoToolbox that has been successfully incubated this year. Manuel is also taking part in the organisation of the OTB HackFest each year where the OTB community can meet. Other communities can join too and are very welcome at this event, I got the luck to participate in such a kind of event and I have to say that I was amazed by the great work they do there. During the hack fest, users and developers meet to share their use cases of the software, discuss the next steps for the project, but also the issue they may face using this or that part of the project and so on. It is just a very nice and efficient way to have feedbacks from the community and to meet often. Manuel is very open to discussion even when, like I do, you have only question to ask him and not much to offer. I am confident that Manuel will be a great addition to the OSGeo Charter Members list.

I want to nominate Cristina Domínguez. Cristina is a Technical Engineer in Topography. She started using gvSIG in 2010 and since then she has been a prominent user in many OsGeo software: qGIS, OpenLayers, Leaflet, GeoNetwork, GeoServer, postGIS,... She is an active OSM user since 2014. Cristina is also part of the GeoInquietos group in Sevilla and has participated and organizaed many local and regional geo events, usually related to foss and open data like mapping parties.
