I am an Oceanographer by training, working more and more with open source software. I oversee and support a project called OpenNSPECT, which estimates nonpoint-source pollution and erosion based on classified land cover data. That tool currently (2016) works with MapWindow, an open source GIS system. We are contemplating moving it to QGIS.
