Community Events and Code Sprint

Participation is free of charge and anyone involved or interested in getting involved in OSGeo community projects is welcome.

You can choose to contribute to one or more projects. The sky is the limit. There’s always plenty to do – and it’s not all about programming. Translation, documentation, feedback, discussions, and testing are very important for projects! Conference registration is not a prerequisite for participation in the community sprint.

When

Community Events and Code Sprints will be held on

  • Saturday 22nd November 2025, 9am - 5pm
  • Sunday 23rd November 2025, 9am - 5pm

Where

The community sprint will be hosted at the Conference Venue at AUT.

Registered Attendees

The community sprint is free of charge but we kindly ask you to write down your name for better planning.

Earth Observation Lab Aotearoa Hackathon

  • Saturday 22nd November 2025
  • AUT Campus Foyer, Registration from 9am
  • 9am - 3pm
  • FREE to participate (No conference ticket required to attend)

A hackathon, using the raw data that is coming down from the TPA-1 satellite(https://www.nanosats.eu/sat/tpa-1) to the UoA Space Institute.

UOA and EOLab are working together to get this data accessible to wider NZ. It is nothing fancy, RGB and fairly low res, needs everything done to it from geo-registration upwards. But could be a cool chance for the community to get a chance to play with raw data that is coming off the first Kiwi built, owned and operated satellite.

GeoRust

Curious about using the Rust programming language for geospatial tasks, maybe through Python bindings?

We've got a range of open source projects loosely centred around cloud-native geospatial libraries that could be interesting for you to work on!

  • obstore - Interface to files on object storage
  • geotiff / async-tiff - Reading GeoTIFFs in Rust
  • rustac - SpatioTemporal Asset Catalog (STAC)-related tools
  • ++ more!

Feel free to come along even if you're just a beginner (some of us are pretty new too). We're keen to get people started on Rust stuff, but also open to hacking on more tricky things in the ecosystem.

HOTOSM mapping

With Mikko Tamura, Regional Community Manager, Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team.

Saturday 3pm to 5pm to allow global mappers to join in remotely.

Overall Organization

The FOSS4G 2025 Team is the proud organiser of the community event and code sprint days.

For any question you can contact Simon Nitz, the person in charge of the FOSS4G 2025 Program.
