Open source technologies have transformed the way organizations build, manage, and share geospatial data. This talk demonstrates how four powerful tools can be integrated into a complete enterprise GIS solution—without the costs and restrictions of proprietary platforms.

Stefan shared news and notes, including the Luna Geo free tutorials, and a gis automation tool

+
We chatted about AI in GIS and coding generally, Saroj - recent grad - also had some questions about how much coding he would end up doing in GIS which Kaitlyn and Stefan were able to speak to.

We will begin with QGIS, a user-friendly desktop GIS that empowers teams to edit, analyze, and visualize data. From there, we explore PostGIS, the spatial extension to PostgreSQL, which provides the enterprise-grade database backbone needed for multi-user editing, versioning, and secure data management. Next, we highlight GeoServer, a robust standards-compliant server that enables the publication of vector and raster data as interoperable web services (WMS, WFS, WCS). Finally, we showcase LunaMap, a modern web GIS platform that delivers these services directly to the browser, offering interactive mapping for teams, stakeholders, and the public.

Through practical workflows and real-world examples, attendees will learn how to design an integrated stack that supports collaboration, transparency, and scalability. Whether you are a local government, a consultancy, or an educational institution, this session will provide the blueprint to adopt open source GIS confidently and effectively.
