OSGeo and AGU sign a Memorandum of Understanding

The Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) and the American Geophysical Union (AGU) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the European Geoscience Union (EGU) General Assembly in Vienna on April ## 2018.

The aim of the agreement is to develop co-ordinated activities to share expertise to advance societal priorities by promoting sustainable open science through reliable open source geospatial software, open datasets and related resources, especially for early career scientists:

• To improve scientific recognition for open software and open resource-related efforts by suitable citation standards and best-practices.
• To hold joint international workshops and conference sessions on open geo-datasets and open source geospatial software for the geophysical sciences.

Both organizations will establish a liaison to ensure good information flow and cooperation.

OSGeo is a not-for-profit organization founded in 2006 whose mission is to support and promote the collaborative development of open source geospatial technologies and data. [Do we have a more lengthy & glorious text than this ?]

AGU was established in 1919 by the U.S. National Research Council, and for more than 50 years, we operated as an unincorporated affiliate of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. AGU was independently incorporated in 1972. AGU is dedicated to the furtherance of the Earth and space sciences, and to communicating science’s ability to benefit humanity. AGU achieves these goals through publishing scientific journals and other technical publications, sponsoring scientific meetings, supporting education and outreach programs designed to increase public understanding of and support for science, and a variety of other activities.
