Metrics and selecting inactive projects to retired from OSGeo-Live

1 February 2016

One of the core principles behind OSGeo-Live is to help new users find the best geospatial open source applications. Quality applications which are widely used and maintained by established and robust communities.

As such, it is important for us as a community to continue to review our list of OSGeo-Live applications to ensure the projects are still valuable and are being maintained. Very helpful for evaluating the health of a community are the metrics provided by OpenHub. They are helpful for us as a community in keeping track of projects, and also for new users in assessing projects, which is why we collate them at: http://live.osgeo.org/en/metrics.html

For the upcoming OSGeo-Live 9.5 release, I'm proposing to make this metrics page easier to find, by providing a direct link to it from the OSGeo-Live toolbar.

I also propose to also review this metrics page and do something about projects which indicate a lack of community or recent activity.

This might be as simple as updating out-of-date OpenHub metrics pages. But there are some projects which appear to have lost their community and as such should be retired from OSGeo-Live.

Projects which should be investigated include:

  • gvSig - no recent activity. Is it looking at the correct code repository?
  • GeoNode - no recent activity. Is it looking at the correct code repository?
  • Cartaro - no OpenHub metrics
  • ncWMS - incorrectly titled as "Web Map Service for NetCDF data", minimal recent development
  • 52 North WPS - no recent activity. Is it looking at the correct code repository?
  • tinyOWS - no recent activity. Is it looking at the correct code repository?
  • QGIS Servier - no OpenHub metrics as it is part of QGIS. Would it be possible to pull out as a separate project?
  • SpatiLite - no recent activity. Is it looking at the correct code repository?
  • GpsDrive - no recent activity. Has critical errors preventing building. https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo/ticket/1601
  • GpsPrune - only one developer. I can't find an email list to gauge the community update. But the project is well established.
  • GeoKettle - no recent activity. Is the project being used?
  • GMT - no recent activity. Is it looking at the correct code repository?
  • TileMill - no OpenHub metrics
  • Ushahidi - no recent activity. Is it looking at the correct code repository?
