Projects

ASCCA is one of two orgs - Kiyooka Ohe Arts Centre is the other - bringing their geospatial challenges to the commons

  • Greg Shyba, CEO, ASCCA presented information on the conservation area, its history, purpose, and outstanding goals or needs with some geospatial components. File:ASSCA OSGeo Presentation.pdf
  • NOTES
    • ASCCA is 4800 acres on a 99 year lease donated in two installments
    • Visitors were ~10K/yr prior to COVID and have been ~25K/yr since
    • The area has limited visitor capacity and strict enforcement of non-disturbance for the area
    • diverse wildlife including a bear den on the property / also employ "caught on camera" feed of a dozen wildlife cameras
    • Four reservoirs on the property including one which will be stocked with fish and will accomodate mobility challenged kids
    • Cell coverage exists but is spotty
    • Needs / Potential geospatial projects
      • Trail Placement, including for mobility challenged
        • Require good mapping of potential routes showing slope/drainage, and other placement factors
      • Ongoing Env management
      • Require mapping of plant/animal species and ongoing data collection to monitor changes

Following

Presentations

  • Dr. Ashok Krishnamurthy will present a quick update on his geospatial efforts related to his infectious disease research
  • Greg Shyba, CEO of the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation area, will join us to talk about some geospatial challenges faced by their non-profit.
    • ASCCA is one of two orgs - Kiyooka Ohe Arts Centre is the other - bringing their geospatial challenges to the commons
      • We have volunteers already engaged with both groups.
      • We are hoping to enable volunteers to engage with the geospatial issues to improve their skills, knowledge, and visibility

Some suggestions from the chapter for presentations include:

  • Show us your side hustle
  • Bring us your problems ( stuff you're working on and issues )
  • teach something new ( OS Geo projects or other ).
