GeoServer Graduates OSGeo Incubation

OSGeo is pleased to announce that the GeoServer project has graduated from incubation and is now a full fledged OSGeo project. Andrea Aime, a long time member of the GeoServer Project Steering Committee (PSC), has been appointed as project representative.

GeoServer is an open source Java server that allows users to share and edit geospatial data. Designed for interoperability GeoServer has always had a strong base in open standards and is a reference implementation of the OGC Web Feature and Web Coverage Services. It also supports other well known standards such as the Web Map and Web Processing services, in addition to various other non-OGC specific protocols.

Graduating incubation includes fulfilling requirements for open community operation, a responsible project governance model, code provenance, and general good project operation. Graduation is the OSGeo seal of approval for a project and gives potential users and the community at large an added confidence in the viability and safety of the project.

The GeoServer Project Steering Committee says, "The GeoServer team is thrilled about OSGeo membership. Even though GeoServer has not been an official OSGeo project until now there have always been strong ties between the two communities with several of the GeoServer developers being involved with OSGeo as chapter members and active participants in various OSGeo conferences. As such we are very happy to now officially be part of OSGeo and a member of such an esteemed group of projects."

OSGeo would also like to thank Landon Blake, Jody Garnett, and the Aust-NZ OSGeo Chapter for their work through this Incubation process.
