Descoping OSGeo-Live for next 11.0 release

18 April 2017

For our next OSGeo-Live release, 11.0, we propose to de-scope what is included. There are a few factors leading to this suggestion:

  1. While many OSGeo projects are consistently improving and growing, others are gradually loosing communities and momentum.
  2. OSGeo-Live build processes have been continuously been improving, allowing us to build more applications more efficiently and we are now supporting both 64 bit and 32 bit architectures. However, this has increased our core maintenance of testing, maintaining, and reaching out to projects.
  3. OSGeo-Live has grown from just a marketing tool to being a platform for workshops and training at many FOSS4G and other OSGeo related events, and there is a desire to extend these training initiatives.
  4. With the last few releases, we've had less help from projects with reviewing, testing and maintaining applications, project overviews and quickstarts. (This is partly due to the core team spending less time chasing projects)
  5. For the first time in 9 years we missed our final release deadline for our 10.5 release.

Consequently, we have needed to admit to ourselves that we need to re-align scope to match our resources. We are faced with the choices of:

  1. Reduce quality. High quality one of our core project goals and not something we plan to compromise on.
  2. Become more efficient. We have already been doing this, and there isn't many more gains to be made.
  3. Increase our volunteer base and engagement. We are seen some new volunteers step up, and hope to see some more.
  4. Find a sponsor for paid resources to cover core work. This would be awesome, but we don't want to rely on this.
  5. Reduce scope. This is our most viable option.
