Pacific Islands Chapter of OSGeo

Welcome to the Pacific Islands Chapter of Open Source Geospatial Foundation OSGeo, started on November, 9 2012, Fiji Time.

Introduction

Open Source for geospatial software has been advocated here in the Pacific Islands region for over a decade. The GIS/RS Special Interest Group of the Pacific Islands Chapter of Internet Society GIS/RS SIGhas been instrumental in the promotion of Open Source spearheaded by the Pacific Applied and Geoscience Commission (SOPAC) by making source code available to its Stakeholders starting with the GIS for Utilities Project in 1997. Since then the GIS/RS community in the Pacific Islands region have been thriving and active with Open Source sessions/discussions during the Pacific Islands GIS/RS annual conference GIS/RS Conference.

Objectives

The Pacific Islands Chapter, facilitates the advancement of open source for geospatial software, technologies and usage in the Pacific Islands region by:

  • Sharing source code, data, information, problems and solutions among users
  • Operation of a mailing list https://groups.google.com/d/forum/pic-osgeo (Temporary)
  • Encouraging the creation of national users groups
  • Organizing meetings, training/workshops and work towards a regional Pacific Islands OSGeo Chapter conference
  • Monitoring open source for geospatial software, technologies and usage
