I've been working in Geospatial for about 9years after 6 years in engineering. Moving into the geospatial and programming domains seemed to be a natural progression from doing a lot of design and CAD work and being computer savvy. Doing engineering field work in the middle of winter in Alaska was also getting a bit old.
