This page is for organising and documenting all non-workshop activities for the morning of 29 Sept and the morning and afternoon of 3 Oct and other times where available.

Outreach

Volunteers needed We would like to organise the following, other ideas welcome:

  • Public lectures on FOSS GIS given by FOSS GIS delegates. One or more people volunteer to give a flashy lecture and demo at UCT great hall or civic centre, free to the public and well marketed.
  • FOSS GIS workshops for
    • High School teachers (Fri afternoon 3 Oct at UCT or UWC?)
    • University students
    • University lecturers / faculty (Friday morning 3 Oct at UCT or UWC?)
    • Government officials
  • Install and configure (Ubuntu and) FOSS GIS software stack and data at schools / local municipalities around Cape Town
  • a public talk and demo in a township that's a wow! For all the kids
  • a field mapping or participatory GIS exercise in a township

These activities would be held at schools, universities or other public facilities in and around Cape Town.

  • Houwteq Satellite Integration Facility in Grabouw – Institute for satellite and software application

followed by wine tasting on a wine farm in Grabouw ( venue still to be secured ) where

Francois Knight : secured (from Agri Informatic) will present an interesting presentation on how GIS is used in the wine industry

or

  • Sunspace in Technopark ( 1.5h visit)

followed by wine tasting on a wine farm in Stellenbosch( venue still to be secured ) where

  • Cape Town Metro GIS department.
  • We have also had offers from the Overberg and Saldanha municipalities.
