Key Accomplishments
The MapServer project has released two major versions in 2025: 8.4.0 (January) and 8.6.0 (December). These releases include significant new features and improvements to enhance functionality and performance.
- MapServer 8.4.0 (January 2025): Introduced support for PCRE2 library, a new CONNECTIONTYPE RASTERLABEL, increased LEGEND_KEYSIZE_MAX, four new COMPOSITE blending operations, and improved encryption key file
handling. Also enabled use_default_extent_for_getfeature for OGC Features API and PostGIS.
- MapServer 8.6.0 (December 2025): Added support for appending additional query parameters for OGCAPI: Features, a new MapServer index page, enhanced WMS GetFeatureInfo functionality for precise point identification, a FALLBACK parameter for CLASS objects, and vendorSpecificParameters in the OpenAPI document.
- Demo Server Maintenance: The demo server ([1](https://demo.mapserver.org)) continues to be updated and maintained, providing a valuable resource for the community.
- Binary Distributions: Debian binaries are readily available, and OSGeoLive and UbuntuGIS releases are incorporating the new versions. MS4W users have access to updated builds.
