SESSION 1. Street Mapping Party in and around Cape Town
OpenStreetMap will be running a ‘Mapping Party’ in the streets of Cape Town which involves walking / cycling / driving with a GPS and editing and uploading your tracks to the free, public www.openstreetmap.org This promises to be lots of fun and you will also be working towards something useful.

SESSION 2 : Google Earth for Educators How to use Google earth in the classroom and its application in geography, biology, history and anything that want to know where things are on our planet.

SESSION 3. Mapping and GIS Options 2 computer labs of 20 people + classrooms
- Option 1. Map-aware where basic map skills are limited.
!!Volunteers needed: talk about basic mapping with examples!!
- Option 2. Demos of internet examples for grades 10 - 12 for teachers who don't want to learn GIS but want to know where to find examples to use in the classroom.
!!Volunteers needed: people who know about web sites that will be useful to teachers and who have experience with what is happening elsewhere. this could be 2 different people sharing a session!!
- Option 3. Hands-on exposure to GIS
!!Voluneers needed: to give teachers an overview of GIS functionality. Software still to be decided in consultation with Department of Education.
- Option 4 Google Earth for educators

SESSION 4. Outdoor event to learn about GPS in the Rondevlei Nature Reserve. Practical use of GIS technology in nature that includes working with a GPS, marking and finding points, observing wetland bird and looking at data collected previously using GIS software. This is an opportunity to see what how GIS can be applied in real life. GPS will be provided but bring your own if you have.

Suggested options A hands-on-demo would be great. They have ArcView 3.3 on their computers. We should consider installing and showing something with an open source flavour. Exposure by an international delegate of what’s happening in education elsewhere in the world. Exposure to OS GIS software by means of distributing a CD.
Workshop for University of Cape Town students and staff
- Geospatial lab in the Environmental & Geographical Science department @ UCT
- 16 PC's available / 30 Students
- 3rd , 4th year students, postgraduate and UCT staff will attend
- Current software installed on computers: Manifold, may install other software
- To confirm with Dr Kevin Winter at the Environmental and Geographical Sciences department
- GIS delegates/volunteers to present workshop on Spatial data infrastructure development,web-based GIS, any other suggestions preferably OPEN SOURCE

Day course on open source applications
- Honours and postgraduate students to attend
- Day event in the Geomatics computer lab @ UCT
- Presenter: Martin Dresen from Germany

- Survey on webmapping applications
- OpenLayers
- UMN Mapserver applications (MS4W package)
We would also like to organise the following:
- Public lectures on FOSS GIS given by FOSS GIS delegates. One or more people volunteer to give a flashy lecture and demo at UCT great hall or civic centre, free to the public and well marketed.
- FOSS GIS workshops for Government officials
- Install and configure (Ubuntu and) FOSS GIS software stack and data at schools / local municipalities around Cape Town
- a public talk and demo in a township that's a wow! For all the kids
- a field mapping or participatory GIS exercise in a township
