OSGeo Experience and Roles:
Alex is an Associate Professor in Geoinformatics at the Landscape Geoinformatics Lab, University of Tartu. He is a Distributed Spatial Systems Researcher with many years of experience in geospatial data management and web- and cloud-based geoprocessing, with a focus on land use, soils, hydrology, hydrogeology and water quality data. He is interested in OGC standards and web services for environmental and geo-scientific data sharing, modelling workflows and interactive geo-scientific visualisation.
He works on open-source Discrete Global Grid System (DGGS) tools and standards, linking OGC, academia and the OSGeo community. He co-chairs the OGC DGGS Standards Working Group and develops dggrid4py (Python interface to DGGRID) and pydggsapi (OGC API – DGGS server). He also shares open geospatial teaching materials, e.g. geopython2025.
He was a member of the organising committee of FOSS4G Europe 2024 in Tartu, Estonia and took part in the OSGeo community sprint there. Code and projects: GitHub.
