Description: The Open Source Geospatial Foundation, or OSGeo, is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to support and promote the collaborative development of open geospatial technologies and data. The foundation provides financial, organizational and legal support to the broader open source geospatial community. It also serves as an independent legal entity to which community members can contribute code, funding and other resources, secure in the knowledge that their contributions will be maintained for public benefit. OSGeo also serves as an outreach and advocacy organization for the open source geospatial community, and provides a common forum and shared infrastructure for improving cross-project collaboration.

Key People: The Free and Open Source Software Community. The non-profit foundation is incorporated in Delaware, USA as an organization with 20 officers managing all project steering committees.

Markets or Membership Served: All markets, focusing on spatial developers, professionals and businesses.

History: OSGeo was founded in 2006 with an initial charter membership of 21 individuals. By 2008 it has grown to several thousand active members from all industries and walks of life, more than 250 registered developers, a global charter membership of 73 spatial professionals, developers and managers, 9 directors, president and CEO.

Locations: Global scope with 37 local chapters as of October 2008.
