Key Accomplishments & Activities (2025)

Debian GIS saw ongoing maintenance and development activity throughout 2025, primarily focused on package updates, dependency management, and addressing technical challenges.

  • Package Maintenance: Several key packages received updates. Bas Couwenberg actively removed outdated or unused packages from various task definitions, including:
   * Dropping `libhdf4-alt-dev` from the devel task.
   * Removing `python3-mapnik` from the workstation task.
   * Eliminating `googleearth-package` from the remotesensing task.
  • Technical Challenges - python-mapnik: A significant issue arose with the `python-mapnik` package due to the upstream project's lack of tagged releases, absence from PyPI, and unresponsiveness to issues (particularly after pybind11 changes broke imports). This impacted the ability to transfer maintenance of mapproxy.
  • Project Status:
   * Git repositories were maintained (migrated from Alioth to Salsa).
   * Focus remained on core GIS tools: GRASS, GDAL, PostGIS, and QGIS.
   * While the project wiki and documentation haven't been updated since 2018, active development and package tracking (via the Debian Package Tracker) confirm ongoing work.
  • Community & Coordination:
   * Active discussions on the debian-gis mailing list and IRC channel (#debian-gis on OFTC) regarding package transitions, sponsorship, and new contributions.
   * The Debian GIS Policy document remains a central reference.
