I am a retired scientist/engineer (Ph.D. Physical Chemistry, B.S. Chemical Engineering) with a career in energy-related endeavors (petroleum reservoir engineering, nuclear waste disposal). Since retirement I have gotten involved in organizing volunteers for political action, with an overall objective of reducing the influence of money in U.S. elections. By a somewhat circuitous path, this has led me to learn to use GIS software so I can make tools available to candidates who may not have a large campaign warchest whose political philosophy I agree with. I wrote my first computer program back in 1956, so I have a pretty good grasp of how the field has evolved, but find the learning curve to be rather steep when I start digging into a new application. I find that organizations like yours are very helpful to all levels of users.
