I convene the Smart Cities Research Cluster at UNSW. The Smart Cities Research Cluster (SCRC) seeks to promote and advance the efficient design, planning and delivery of urban environments and services through the use of spatially integrated information and communication technology. The Cluster is currently producing a book on the global open data movement and its impact and potential within cities. Titled "Open Cities | Open Data : collaborative cities in the information era" it is due for publication by Palgrave Macmillan in 2019. https://www.palgrave.com/gp/book/9789811366048 Most of the focus on smart cities is in those wealthy areas of the world which are already rich in technology. In contrast I have a special interest in the contribution of technology to emerging economies in Asia, Africa and locations which these radical technologies are not evenly distributed. My work in this area has also focused on civic technologies for mapping safety, informal landscapes and digital infrastructure.
