Stefanos is a researcher in the Geospatial Analysis Unit (ANAGEO) at the Free University of Brussels. He does research in quantitative geography, remote sensing, spatial epidemiology and machine learning. He is particularly interested in the use of geo-information for helping address the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with a geographical interest in sub-Saharan African cities.

He is a strong proponent of the open-source and access movement and has embraced the open science philosophy. He is currently developing spatial machine learning software in the statistical programming language R https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/SpatialML/index.html .
