The primary version of the OSGeo Journal is written in United States English. Translators are welcome to translate any portion of the OSGeo Journal into another language, but must work as close as possible with the Journal editorial team.

Please join the Journal mailing list and introduce yourself as a translator. Also add yourself to the appropriate list(s) below.

Guidelines

Please review the Journal Licensing and Guidelines page first, to read about licensing conditions of the work. There must be at least two people reviewing a translated work for a particular language, to help ensure accurate translation. A single translator must have someone proof-read the final work.

Process

Following approach is currently bad because all translations end up under the main trunk

The text of the Journal is managed in a subversion code repository, as latex text files. When a volume of the Journal is released (as US English), it is always stored in a folder with a version number, i.e. journal/volume_1. Language specific branches can then be made.

Administrator creates default language branch, which will act as a tag of the main version

svn mkdir -m "adding translation folder" http://svn.osgeo.org/osgeo/journal/volume_1/translation/
svn copy -m "tagging main english version" http://svn.osgeo.org/osgeo/journal/volume_1 http://svn.osgeo.org/osgeo/journal/volume_1/translation/english_us

Translator checks out language specific folder

svn checkout http://svn.osgeo.org/osgeo/journal/volume_1/translation/french

Translator edits files in local copy of the language folder - not in main volume folder

vi french/editorial/mitchell.tex
vi french/topical/blake/blake.tex
etc...

Compiling documentation should still work after translation

cd french
make
cp OSGeoJournal_vol1.pdf final_pdfs

Submit back to repository

svn commit --message "comments here" french

Proof reader and co-translators must then review changes. Editorial team can then post the translated version to the main Journal pages.
