PostGIS Provenance Review
Project History
PostGIS was developed at Refractions Research starting in 2001, as an extension to the PostgreSQL relational database. For the first several years of development, all developers were Refractions employees or contractors. PostGIS follows appropriate international standards (OpenGIS SFSQL, ISO SQL/MM Part 3) to provide a full open source spatial database environment for users.
The first versions of PostGIS were maintained on a local file system. PostGIS began using CVS for revision control around version 0.5, and moved to SVN around version 1.0. PostGIS is now supported as a backend for numerous open source and proprietary GIS systems.
A detailed development history is available at http://www.refractions.net/products/postgis/history/
