About

A spatial data infrastructure (SDI) is a data infrastructure implementing a framework of geographic data, metadata, users and tools that are interactively connected in order to use spatial data in an efficient and flexible way. Wikipedia:SDI

OSGeo considers the ability of its software projects to implement various SDIs an important feature for organizations around the world.

Software components of SDIs

Basic software components of SDI are:

  • catalogue service
  • spatial data service
  • processing services
  • spatial data repository
  • Client software (desktop and web) communicates via standards to those services, which interacts directly with the user. It enables download, display, query, analysis and updating spatial data.

OSGeo projects cover all these software components. Some of them are covered by multiple OSGeo projects.

Standards

Most of SDIs are related to OGC standards (OGC OWS) as well as ISO. They are all well implemented in OSGeo projects.

Current SDIs

  • GEOSS Global Earth Observation System of Systems. 2005-2015
  • GMES Global Monitoring for Environment and Security. Should be fully operational during 2014
  • INSPIRE Infrastructure for Spatial Information in the European Community.
  • UNSDI United Nations Spatial Data Infrastructure
  • NSDI National Spatial Data Infrastructure
